Book Description

Art & Poetry Series April 1, 2000
With the marriage of The Wizard of Oz's most beloved song and the iridescent paintings of one of America's most beloved artists, comes Mary Tiegreen's beautifully designed Over the Rainbow, the fifth installment in Welcome's fabulous Art & Poetry series.

Very few songs have taken hold of our hearts and imaginations the way "Over the Rainbow" has, stirring up wistfulness and a longing to be free. These lyrics, so evocative of light and color, have found thier perfect match in the paintings of Maxfied Parrish. These paintings seem to generate a light of their own, reflecting off the words on each page, and the result is a feeling of warmth and exuberance, and a sense that dreams "really do come true."

From the Inside Flap

With the marriage of The Wizard of Oz's most beloved song and the iridescent paintings one of America's most beloved artists, comes Mary Tiegreen's beautifully designed Over the Rainbow, the fifth installment of Welcome's fabulously successful Art & Poetry series.

Very few songs have taken hold of our hearts and imaginations the way "Over the Rainbow" has, stirring up wistfullness and a longing to be free. These lyrics, so evocative of light and color, have found their perfect match in the paintings of Maxfield Parrish. The paintings seem to generate a light of their own, reflecting off the words of each page, and the result is a feeling of warmth and exuberance that dreams "really do come true." Over the Rainbow, the latest volume in this wonderful series, unites E.Y. Harburg's lyrics, immortalized in The Wizard of Oz with the luminous artwork of Maxfield Parrish.

About the Author

Maxfield Parrish (1870-1966) was one of the most popular artists of the early decades of this century, with reproductions of his artwork finding their way into one quater of all homes in America. From 1895 onward, prints and paintings have been bestsellers on an unprecedented level.

E.Y. "Yip" Harburg (1896-1981) wrote more than 500 songs, many of them to the music of Harold Arlen, who was the composer for "Over the Rainbow." His voice was at once skeptical and optimistic, and his songs express plaintive yearning in a witty and memorable style.

3.0 out of 5 stars Lyrics are wrong at the start, November 26, 2005
This review is from: Over The Rainbow (Art & Poetry Series) (Hardcover)
The lyrics at the beginning of the book are incorrect. Most people would not know this, as the lyrics weren't used in The Wizard of Oz. The correct lyric is: "When all the world is a hopeless jumble and the raindrops tumble all around, Heaven opens a magic lane. When all the clouds darken up the skyway there's a rainbow highway to be found, leading from your window pane to a place behind the sun - just a step beyond the rain." The book leaves out the word "highway" - pretty critical to the sense of the lyric and the rhyme. The only reason I know this is that the Seattle Men's Chorus uses "Over the Rainbow" as its theme song, and starts with the beginning of the song - inlcuding the lyric that Judy Garland didn't sing in the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful gift for someone you cherish, October 18, 2004
This review is from: Over The Rainbow (Art & Poetry Series) (Hardcover)
Sometimes you don't know what to get a person who has everything. This is it. An art lover to a music lover can appreciate the beauty in this creative interpretation of Over the Rainbow, which is most often associated with Judy Garland and The Wizard of Oz. This would be a great book to show a child that Over the Rainbow exists in an entirely different form than television portrays.

The timeless lyrics to "Over the Rainbow" are brought to life in this dreamily illustrated book. Each picture is done in soft, muted colors...the overall effect is dreamy. This book would make an excellent present for anyone, young or old.
