Review

An old-timey New England landscape of wintry merrymaking. A lovely way to start the season.
—The New York Times

Tavares brings life to this countryside jaunt with light doses of humor and action.
—Publishers Weekly

The classic song gets a stellar treatment in this latest retelling. I find that I was only familiar with the original verse, and was interested to see many more in this beautiful picture book. The illustrations are reminiscent of Currier and Ives, and dropped me solidly into holiday mode from the very first page. There are tons of picture books out there that have used this song as a basis for all sorts of visual interpretations, but if you are looking for a classic, old fashioned version to add to your collection, this is the one. It's just beautifully done, from the paintings that perfectly evoke a rural snowy day in the 1800's, to the classic font. A perfect addition to any holiday collection.

The illustrations are peaceful, happy, and lively all at the same time! I like this style of illustration for children's books: life-like, earthy and somewhat cinematic, too. Love it! It really reprsents the best of Thanksgiving history and sentiment of the importance of family.

There are several books available based on the old song about the trek to Grandmother's house on Thanksgiving Day. This one has amazing, nostalgic illustrations that remind of Courier and Ives. The illustrations take the reader on a past era, compelling journey. Enjoyable.

I was only familiar with the first verse and was pleased to find this book with the entire original text. I absolutely LOVE the images:
- stunning water colors on each page to accompany the text.
- a peek at traveling through snow-covered towns and forests on a horse-drawn sleigh more than a century ago.

It will become a family classic that will be shared each Thanksgiving at my house.

I've had different versions of this favorite classic over the years. We get this book out each fall and read it over and over again to add to the anticipation and celebration of the Thanksgiving season. It's a classic and I love that my children and grandchildren are familiar with this favorite Thanksgiving poem.
