A chip the size of a tractor..., August 25, 2007
This review is from: Is Over the Road Trucking for You? (Paperback)
The author of this tome is certainly a trucker. Been around a long time from the sound of it, and my god, does he have a chip on his shoulder. I don't think a paragraph of the book goes by without a discussion of how great the Teamsters (union) is (was?) and how bad the world is since trucking was deregulated.
Once you get passed the union slant on every page, the book has a great deal of information, although it is a tough slog to get through it. The table of contents is nothing more than a collection of all paragraph headers. The sections themselves tend to ramble around the point.
All in all, this was a tough book to get through, alot of attitude and vitriol poured from the pages, and finding what might interest you is difficult, but there is information here.

Is OTR for You? from America's top truck driver trainer, August 4, 2008
This review is from: Is Over the Road Trucking for You? (Paperback)
Is Over the Road Trucking for You? Perhaps and perhaps not! This is the second Gordon J Knapp book I have read. Mr Knapp knows his stuff from the inside out. I personally consider Gordon Knapp, with his over 20 years experience - as America's top truck driver trainer.
Occasionally philosophic, Mr Knapp asks do you really want to work around the clock? Can you put in the long hours it takes to make a decent paycheck?
Mr. Knapp longs for the days when Teamsters ruled the roads, when companies had set routes and everybody knew your name. But those kinder gentler days are gone and his main concern - road safety - is now an issue. Mr. Knapp lists a number of issues for someone whom is considering a career in truck driving. He cites WalMart as having one of the best professional teams on the road. He also points out some of the not-so-safe practices of companies that put new, inexperienced drivers on the road to train fresh out of school drivers.
An old hand, Mr Knapp shares his many years of hard earned wisdom. A must buy if you want to learn the inside scoop working in one of the biggest industries in the USA.
Update 9-2010: the trucking industry, experiencing the roller-coaster effects of the economy, has changed a lot since I wrote this review two years ago, but if you are still interested in truck driving, especially with the DOT's new "CSA" enforcement push, there are no other books I would recommend for someone breaking into becoming a new truck driver.

Is Over The Road Trucking For You?, September 28, 2007
This review is from: Is Over the Road Trucking for You? (Paperback)
This is the most realistic and honest book about over the road trucking I have ever seen. The information here is invaluable and this should be considered a 'MUST READ ' book for anyone interested in becoming a trucker of any kind, company or owner-operator.
The opportunities and shortcomings are both thoroughly presented in an understandable profile. After reading this book, I knew that trucking would work for me, even though there are many problems to overcome.
However, My friend who also read the book decided that it definitly would not work for him.
GREAT BOOK!!!!
