Editorial Reviews

Ten years after Dave Koz gathered many of his musical friends to craft the lush and lilting all-star project Golden Slumbers, Matt Pierson -- one of contemporary jazz's most prominent producers over the last few decades -- takes on the extraordinary task of helming a project whose expansive creative scope is only surpassed by its heart for the two charities it is raising funds for: The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Young Survival Coalition. The album's simple subtitle will surely keep the listener's focus on the beautiful, soaring voices of today's top stage performers -- from culturally famous names like Vanessa Williams, Kelli O'Hara, and Audra McDonald to others more specifically known to that community and its fans. But the ambitious two-CD, 26-track set is equally a showcase for the gentle, parental side of an exciting crop of composers and lyricists (again, some legends like Stephen Sondheim and Stephen Schwartz, others lesser known) and -- true to Pierson's legacy as a Grammy-winning jazz maestro -- top jazz artists playing an intimate supporting role. So while the elegant and wistful first single "A Lullaby for Midnight" could be appreciated by anyone open to the dreamy, crystalline caress of Williams' voice, others will note that it was written by former pop star/musical composer Rupert Holmes and jazz fans will appreciate the subtleties of artists like pianist Taylor Eigsti and guitarist Julian Lage. Likewise with the soulful and sweet "Lucky." It's sung beautifully by Donna Murphy, penned by Schwartz (for his opera Séance on a Wet Afternoon), and features the magical hypnosis of Gil Goldstein's piano and Jody Redhage's cello. While some of the tracks are adaptations of previously penned material, others were written and recorded specifically for the project. Adults will be able to appreciate its multifaceted musical mastery even as they use it for its primary purpose of lulling their children to sleep. The musical project is one element of a multimedia presentation that includes a hardcover book (sold separately) featuring lyrics illustrated (naturally) by some of America's most renowned theatrical designers and children's book illustrators. This is a project that not only defines its time but should endure as a landmark of charitable musical endeavors for generations. ~ Jonathan Widran Audio Mixer: James Farber. 5.0 out of 5 stars Over the moon for "Over the Moon" June 5, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Let's face it, first-time moms need lots of "stuff:" diaper pails, car seats, pack 'n plays and more. But if it's a mom's second or third baby, she might be up to her eyeballs in onesies and bibs. Finding just the right gift can be a struggle.

Enter "Over the Moon." This beautiful CD of lullabies is written and sung by some of Broadway's greatest talents, and it is perfect for rocking, snuggling, singing and sharing with a little one.

A portion of your dollars will fund two breast cancer charities, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Young Survival Coalition, as well as the Public Interest Projects. I love product that allow me to give and "give back" at the same time.

As a friend of many young women who have faced breast cancer or who are currently struggling, I can think of no better gift for new moms. This beautiful collection is now one of my go-to gifts for the mom who has almost everything.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful music! July 13, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Simply lovely, and a great value. Every song is a gem! The Raul Esparza song is especially touching, and Vanessa Williams sings like an angel.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book/CD plus a Good Cause! August 9, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I received a copy of this book and CD from the publisher for review.

If my life had turned out differently, I would have loved to pursue a career in musical theater. Unfortunately, I discovered that need TALENT in order to succeed in that career. Still, I love musical theater in general and Broadway shows in particular. Be careful when bringing up the name "Stephen Sondheim" or I will immediately launch into a number from "Into the Woods." Add to all of this my love of children's book and children's book illustrators and you have a winning combination in OVER THE MOON.

OVER THE MOON: THE BROADWAY LULLABY PROJECT is a multimedia project that brings together a 2 CD music collection, a beautifully illustrated book, an e-book and a documentary film and web series. Some of Broadway's greatest performers and composers come together in these lovely lullabies and the book offers gorgeous illustrations to accompany the songs. The illustrations are created by a wonderful group of theatrical designers and children's book illustrators. All of these magic comes together for one very important purpose---to raise money for The Breast Cancer Research Foundation and Young Survival Coalition.

The 2 CD music album contains 26 songs that deliver wonderful lullabies in a variety of styles. There really is something for everyone. The book includes a CD with a selection of 17 songs from the album. Noodlebug and I enjoyed looking through the book while we listened to the accompanying CD. My personal favorite was Donna Murphy singing "Lucky" from Stephen Schwartz's opera Séance on a Wet Afternoon. So beautiful!!! Noodlebug liked Marva Hicks singing "Little Sleep Eyes" and a really fun song called "The Man Who Invented Ice Cream.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dull, except for the expected October 12, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I found all of this album dull, rambling, and uninspired except those composers one would expect more from (Stephen Sondheim, Stephen Schwartz, Charles Strouse, Lucy Simon) I am sorry I bought it.
