Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

For Russell Fralick, there were never enough adventures, never enough challenges, never enough dangers. His ambition drove him to seek the next big thrill in hanging hundreds of feet off the ground in his native United Kingdom and countries around the world. He was consumed with climbing the highest mountains and most daunting rock faces, with the ultimate goal of becoming the best.
And then it happened. In the wet darkness of a climb gone awry, he came face-to-face with death. Suddenly this man who had been running from questions of faith and immortality as fast as he could climb the next mountain was confronted with not just the end of his climbing career but the end of life itself.
In Over the Top, Russell Fralick pulls you up the highlands with him to experience all of the adventure, heart-pounding excitement, and absolute terror that come with extreme climbing. Join him as he scales glaciers and mountains in search of meaning that goes beyond the next big rush.

Russell Fralick's riveting account of a terrifying, life-changing climb was sheer delight. The treacherous conditions Russell faced will make any reader break into a cold sweat. Outdoor pursuits enthusiasts will find the gritty details fascinating, but there is enough life, humor and character study to keep the interest of any reader. I am not a climber, but I loved the skillfully woven, colorful accounts of life in this book. If you ever wanted to see for yourself or encourage your friends that God is real and willing to intervene in our lives, this is convincing.

Fralick writes about his rock climbing hobby, which almost became an obsession or career. He is only interested in being the best and traveling amongst the best, and he engages in quite a little ego trip. But during the entire time he's worrying about being recognized he is also nagged by the feeling that something is missing in his life. Eventually, through a very scary and life-threatening experience climbing, he comes into spiritual recognition of what can power his life. God finds him or he finds God! The story is disorganized in spots and he may not be the most professional or elegant writer, but I liked his climbing tales, the setting in England and other areas, and the way he got his life under control with the help of God.

Not being a rock climber or knowing that much about the sport, I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I thought it might be boring with all the details about rock climbing techniques, but I was pleasantly surprised! It was very interesting and the author's detailed explanations put me right alongside them experiencing everything. It also gave me a newfound respect for the strength and courage this sport takes.
The author's story is like many people searching for Christ and trying to fill that void with other things. I must admit his way of running from God was much more dangerous than the average!
I usually read at night before I go to sleep because it helps me relax. It didn't work that way with this book! I could feel Mr. Fralick's frustration in his attempt to be the best, gain the respect among his peers, and get that adrenaline high he craved. I felt my body tense at the unpredictable and suspenseful moments he faced. I also became exasperated with him that even after many close calls he was delivered from, he turned around and went again to even riskier ones! With all the suspense this was definitely NOT a help you go to sleep book!
His story proves you can't run from God. With all his wanderings, risk taking and seeking the wrong solutions to the anxiety he was experiencing, I could see God working. His hand is seen throughout the story planting seeds, gently guiding Mr. Fralick closer to Him. Yet as with many of us he just didn't get it until that one climb, that one moment he never thought would happen to him, when he faced death head on. It was a blessing that when he did accept Christ he gave himself and his life completely to Him. His passion for rock climbing took on a whole new direction and meaning in the Lord's hands.

The first chapter of this book pulls you in and doesn't let you go, even to the last page. This is the story of a man running for the next adrenaline rush and away from anything that will keep him from this quest, including God.

I'll be honest, I'm not a climber (nor will I ever be) so there were areas of the book, when he went into great detail about his climbs, where my eyes glazed over. I really had no idea what he was talking about, however, it didn't keep me from wanting to finish reading this book. For climbers, his details about his climbs will be all the more riveting than the book already is.

I really liked how the Lord pursued him. People in his life that had given their life to the Lord dropped seeds of faith into Russell's life and we see the results of this when Russell finds himself in the most horrible event ever in a climb. Who else is there to turn to when your life hangs, literally, in the balance.

There are times in this book you'll find your heart in your throat and tears in your eyes as you experience what he experiences. Not only in his climbing adventures but as he becomes a Christian and what that all entails. There are profound observations such as the fact that Christians are scorned but other religions are not. I also love how he gave Christ his all and, not because He saved him from a perilous situation, but because he realized that Christ died for him and He deserved to have Russell accept Him as Savior.

There is a lot of beauty in his writing - about his climbing, about the nature around him and about God. He observes things that some of us take for granted and it brings you back to realizing the beauty of all this.

I highly recommend this book. It's riveting and full of wonderful, thought provoking stories and observations.
