Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Kaplan, author of The New Sex Therapy: Active Treatment of Sexual Dysfunctions (Brunner/Mazel, 1974) and director of the Human Sexuality Program at New York Hospital, emphasizes sensory awareness and partner cooperation in this straightforward self-help guide. The step-by-step, progressive sexual exercises (supplemented by a few superfluous drawings) occupy a mere 18 pages of the text; the bulk of the work details how the reader might serve as his own therapist, recognizing problems when the method seems ineffectual due to "errors and resistances." In simple language, Kaplan guides the reader, emphasizing the high degree of self-cure success with this problem. The only work available that deals exclusively with premature ejaculation, it should prove a useful addition to self-help collections.

This is not the first book I have looked into to find out about how to overcome my problem. I'd honestly suggest this to everybody, who is in search for a book well written, full of deep care and willingness to help. I am afraid of using superlatives, not to discourage those of you who are really fed up by promises... But I can not help saying that every word in that book makes sense and it did helped me alot. Not only do I feel my problem is gone, but also my self-esteem is back and I can enjoy my renewed love and devotion. It does give hope and simple yet very reasonable techniques for revival.

I had tried a bit of the squeeze technique over the years only to find that it made me sore and it was also unpleasant to employ. Then I set out to get serious and just follow a program from start to finish to fix this thing. The book employs nothing but using a technique that is nothing but pleasurable. By the time I got to practising it about the 10th time I was doing just great. It was so difficult to believe that it could all be so simple to learn. I whole heartedly recommend this book to those who will persevere through the practise sessions until they have retrained themselves totally. Surely the little time this takes to learn will make all the difference for the rest of a lifetime.

When I read some of the positive reviews, I was skeptical, but this relatively short paperback was not really expensive, so I figured it was worth a shot. The bottom line is that it worked for me, and I am so grateful that I have the sexual confidence I have been missing my whole life. I didn't do the exercises with a partner. The author has exercises you can do by yourself, and they worked for me over about a month period. I find the author to really have a great handle on what "real" sex is really like, and what real sex should be like. In a world full of misconceptions and lies about sex, this book was so refreshing. I learned a ton about women, myself and sex in general. I would recommend really following the exercise steps closely and carefully, and keep at it. I am amazed. It only took 4-6 weeks of concentration and learning, and it really does work. I am amazed and relieved that I found this great book when I did. It could have been a lot more years, or a lifetime, of uncertainty and disappointment. If the author wasn't deceased, I would write her a letter to personally thank her for changing my life in an important way. I know this sounds over the top, but it's true.

My husband and I read this book because he had a severe case of PE. We didn't know what else to do. This book changed both of our lives. You should read this even if you are a single guy as you don't need a partner. If you do have a wife/girlfriend, she should read it if possible. That made a HUGE difference. But only if she's supportive of this (which she should be as it is her problem too). Yes, men, it DOES matter, so do something about it -- read this book!

I was disapointed to find that this book covers the same information that is available free with a little searching on the internet. Nothing new or dramatic in this book. It is good information but not worth buying the book for.

Had thought the book would be more helpful than it was. It did not really explain why some men have premature ejaculation and why others don't. The instructions seemed mechanical and I did not get the "cure" that was promised on the book cover! Found the book by Birch (Male Sexual Endurance)to be more helpful.

How to Overcome Premature Ejaculation is a well regarded book in the area of sex education and therapy (I work as a sex educator). Helen Singer Kaplan, its author, is a famous sex therapist who wrote other important books and articles about sexuality though this is one of the writings she is most well known for.

Although more is known about premature ejaculation than when she first wrote this book, it remains a good choice for men because the old standards about confidence, relaxation, communicating with a partner and masturbation techniques to learn to delay ejaculation all hold true. I also like the book Coping With Premature Ejaculation which highlights some of the newer information about premature ejaculation including medications and research about why men develop PE in the first place but this book by Dr. Kaplan continues to hold a lot of promise for many single men and couples. It is well written and has important information.

I also think She Comes First by Ian Kerner has information on good techniques that at least one man with PE learned in order to please his partner while he worked out his own PE issues (those techniques are cunnilingus techniques).

Highly recommended.

The only thing worse than being impotent is suffering from PE. I should know- I've experienced the horrors of both. But this book made me realize that my problems are all psychological and can be overcome with just a little confidence and control. Now I can "go" for hours, and Jodi is a very happy girl.
