Book Description

May 1, 2011 New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook

Your adrenal glands play a key role in helping you control stress and maintain energy throughout the day. When these small but important glands malfunction, you may start to notice the telltale signs of adrenal fatigue. Decreased energy, weight gain, mood changes, inability to handle stress, and a weakened immune system are just a few of the symptoms of adrenal imbalance. It can slow you down, interfere with your overall sense of wellness, and even make you feel depressed.

If you suspect that adrenal imbalance is causing symptoms for you, this book will help you figure out what's going wrong and partner with your health care provider to find solutions. In Overcoming Adrenal Fatigue, you'll find clear self-evaluations and treatment guidelines that will empower you to take charge of your adrenal health through nutrition, vitamins, herbs, bioidentical adrenal hormone supplementation, and self-care practices. This complete guide to optimizing adrenal health will give you the tools you'll need to get your symptoms under control and regain the energy to enjoy your active lifestyle.

The complete program in this workbook will help you:
  • Rebuild fatigued adrenals with balancing herbs and supplements
  • Eat for all-day energy and improved concentration
  • Practice mindfulness and relaxation techniques to reduce stress
  • Learn about medications that can help

Editorial Reviews

Review

“As a clinician who has worked with adrenally fatigued patients for more than fifteen years, this is the book I have been waiting for! This is a concise, practical guide for truly healing the adrenal glands. Not only does Kathryn Simpson provide an excellent in-depth section on the causes and symptoms of adrenal fatigue, she also clearly outlines the optimal diet, supplements, and herbs that can help reverse this condition. If you feel fatigued or burnt-out, follow the steps outlined in this guide and you will change your life! This is definitely a book I will recommend to my patients and to anyone suffering with this all-too-prevalent condition.”
—Robin Marzi, RD, nutritional consultant

“After years of treating my patients with traditional therapies, I had the good fortune to meet Kathryn Simpson. After reviewing her extensive research and anecdotal experience, I decided to give hormonal treatment a try with my patients, and the results were amazing. Degenerative disease and even conditions like MS, fibromyalgia, and lupus responded to treating adrenal fatigue with bioidentical hormones and diet and lifestyle changes. Anyone with an inflammatory condition or disease should have their adrenal function tested. All it takes is a simple blood test.”
—William B. Van Valin, II, MD, Chief of Staff, Emeritus at Santa Ynez Valley Cottage Hospital

4.0 out of 5 stars good intro but basic and overpriced August 25, 2012
Format:Paperback
I'm giving it 4 stars because it is simple but reasonably comprehensive, a good introduction for beginners with two or three paragraphs on most of the relevant issues. It probably deserves only 3 stars given it costs $15 when I think $10 is probably high for a basic book like this of barely 120 pages of substance and with fairly large type.

By contrast, Stop The Thyroid Madness (with over 80 four- and five-star reviews), at about the same price, is more than double the size and contains massive amounts of information - including detailed and specific therapeutic dosage and timing details - for both thyroid and adrenal issues (over 40 detailed pages on adrenals). More than 50% of people with any kind of thyroid problem have adrenal problems and who knows what proportion of those with adrenal fatigue have thyroid problems as I haven't seen any indications? The two are very closely linked and TATT (tired all the time) is a huge problem everywhere.

What I liked best about this book was a description of symptoms of low aldosterone. The adrenal cortex also makes aldosterone but low aldosterone is an often unrecognized and definitely under-diagnosed problem. In addition to repeating some of the common adrenal insufficiency symptoms like low blood pressure, rapid pulse rate, heart palpitations and dizziness or light-headedness upon standing, the book explained that sometimes (as symptoms specific to low aldosterone) people urinate as many as 15 to 20 times a day and drink a huge amount of water. These just happen to be the main symptoms of a brother-in-law, one that has puzzled all of us for quite a while as his father had diabetes (a symptom can be frequent urination) but my brother-in-law's diabetes tests are normal.

I also really liked the easiest home test for serious adrenal deficiency that the author borrowed from Wilson's excellent 2001 book (still a classic) called Adrenal Fatigue: all you need for this test is a ball point pen. Drag the dull end of a pen across your abdomen for about six inches (my guess would be about 2 fingers' width above your belly button) but don't press overly hard or scratch the skin. If your adrenals are functioning normally or are only mildly affected, the mark will turn from white to red within about 10 seconds. If your adrenals are fatigued, however, the line will widen and stay white for about 2 minutes. The author explains that this test isn't terribly accurate as only about 40 per cent of people with low adrenal function test positive. It generally tests positive only if the adrenal fatigue is fairly severe. So if you do test positive (as I did, despite over a decade of careful lifestyle and diet), it's almost certain you have low adrenal function.

In any case, the best adrenals lab test is not expensive - it's the 24 hr saliva test (don't let your doctor bully you into the unreliable blood test or urine test).

Later note: here is just some of what the stopthethyroidmadness (STTM) website has to say about adrenal fatigue: there are some who claim that sluggish adrenals can successfully be treated with herbs, vitamins and a change in lifestyle. But patients who have wholeheartedly tried the former for a length of time will state that it simply didn't help. Granted, if one's adrenals are healthy and there is simply need for support in stressful times, or if sluggishness is very slight, there may be value in using herbs, vitamins like C and B, sea salt, and de-stressing. Individuals with moderate to severe adrenal insufficiency - especially if also hypothyroid, which is common as the two glands work very closely together - find they need more than herbs and vitamins. STTM has several self-tests for adrenals plus advice on the alternatives that are good for low, moderate and severe issues respectively

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book! February 16, 2012
Format:Paperback
This is a fantastic book and Kathy Simpson has worked tirelessly to get these issues and solutions out to the public.
It is well written, clear with great descriptions on how to help oneself recover from adrenal fatigue.
As Producer of Wellness Talk Radio, I've read hundreds of "health books", and this one is one of my favorites.
Thanks Kathy!

5.0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life December 1, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have suffered with this debilitating illness for a good 12years and this year it nearly wrecked me. In Feb my gb tested my adrenals and found them to be in scary levels. I did the whole dhea and vitamin b thing but I still struggled. Out of utter despiration, I bought this book. Whilst reading it I started applying what I learnt and slowly I started feeling better. I now am at the healthiest I have been in years and although I still do get tired, I know how to manage it.

This book will take you from shattered to awesome. It will help you decode what to eat, how much to sleep, how much to exercise and how much stress you can take. Its an all round awesome book so if you are tiredm buy this book!

PS, I don't do this whole book review thing so the fact that I am reviewing a book means it works. This book WILL save you money - because yu wont see your doctor very much after this,
