Book Description

March 22, 2001
The book is about my life growing up with a congenital heart defect and how I overcame challenges. I was inspired to write the book after my first year of college. I want children and teens to know they can live happy active lives and achieve highter standards. I also want to help alleviate some of the anxiety that parent's may experience. I also talk about what it was like going through surgery at age four and all the years following.

Review

Very inspirational. My daughter has a disability and I now I have hope for her. -- Janene Jaramillo, March 23, 2001

About the Author

My name is Melissa Curnel. I was diagnosed with Atrial Septal Defect at age four, and had open heart surgery. The doctors were able to repair the hole in my heart with no complications, but I did develope a speech problem, some physical and academic limitations. My life since then has been challenging and I have learned to overcome the difficulties. I am now 20 years old and a sophomore at Central Washington University. School has been challenging for me and like many students, who live with challenges, it takes hard work and perseverance to achieve higher standards.

3.0 out of 5 stars Another Person In My Shoes, July 18, 2001

This review is from: Overcoming Challenges : Congenital Heart Defects ... Life After Heart Surgery (Paperback)
Although this book was not what I expected; I found it to be a great book for young people just starting to learn about their special gift- being a person with a congenital heart defect. I was actually born with a heart condition as well, and I found it interesting to hear another person's point of view on growing up with the challenges that heart patients go through. I found it interesting to hear someone else talk about their experiences before and after undergoing surgery. As I was growing up I always felt that I was the only one who had to go through with the things I had to; such as hospital stays, surgery, and a scar down the center of my chest. Reading Melissa's story made me realise that their are other special people who have gone though similar experiences.
