About the Author

STEVE MAYS is the senior pastor of Calvary Chapel South Bay in Gardena, California for over 31 years. He is a well-known conference and commencement speaker, author and radio personality through the Light of the Word broadcast, heard by thousands throughout the country and abroad. He has also taught at the Christian Embassy United Nations in New York as well as at the Ambassador Study, the Diplomat Study and the Pentagon in Washington DC. Steve has been married to his wife, Gail, for 40 years. They have two grown children and four grandchildren.

More About the Author

How can God use a man like Steve Mays? He was once a heartbeat from hell and is now being used for the kingdom of heaven. What happened in his life? The answer is divine intervention. After more than 30 years in the ministry, Steve has realized the work is really never done. He continues to battle with severe sleep apnea and has also gone through more physical ailments, including fracturing a disk in his back which demanded immediate surgery, recovering from prostate cancer, having both knee replacements and in 2010, he had spinal surgery requiring 42 stitches on the front and 42 stitches on his back. Currently, Steve is also in the midst of yet another building project as God has given more property to the ministry of Calvary Chapel South Bay. He knows for a fact it is the grace of God that has seen him through, and it will be the grace of God that will continue to see him through.

Looking back over his life, Steve understands better what the author of the book of Hebrews and the great apostle Paul said: "Jesus [is] the author and finisher of our faith" and "Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ" (Hebrews 12:2; Philippians 1:6). These promises of God are certainly evident in Steve Mays' life.

Pastor Steve was the Regional Overseer and Pastoral leader over Calvary Chapel Outreach Fellowship, which included over 900 Calvary Chapel ministries, both domestic and international from 1997-2005. He also collaborated with the CHP and developed the South Los Angeles CHP Chaplain program, in which Calvary Chapel Pastors assist the CHP in critical incidents, death notifications and debriefings. He was invited to speak in Nigeria at the Gideons International Convention in 2002, sharing with businessmen the truth of God's Word and the fundamentals of studying His Word. Pastor Steve was also invited to participate at Oxford University's Round Table in London, England. The Oxford Round Table is a symposium for learned discussions of contemporary issues of significant consequence. Pastor Steve's topic of discussion concerned the relevance of religion. He was also one of the guest speakers at the Pro Family Legislators Conference in Dallas, Texas, hosted by Wallbuilders in 2006. In January of 2008, he was invited to conduct a Bible Study at Prison Fellowship Ministries, the Pentagon, and at the White House, where he also attended a special breakfast gathering with then President George W. Bush. Steve Mays has become a well-known conference speaker, commencement speaker, author, and has a national radio broadcast, "Light of the Word" which is heard on many radio stations throughout the country.

I was given this book last year as a gift and I instantly fell in love with it. Just the title alone, Overcoming: Discover How to Rise Above and Beyond Your Overwhelming Circumstances in Life immediately had my attention. I defiantly wanted to OVERCOME my overwhelming circumstances! I found it to be a very insightful book with lots of hope, encouragement, and wisdom. It’s a must read for anyone going through difficult times. Each chapter begins with a bible verse and ends with a bullet list of “points to ponder”. There is also a scripture reference guide in the back of the book.

Pastor Steve Mays does a very good job at connecting with the reader! Before he gets into the meat and potatoes of each chapter he gives a personal touch by giving a view into his life and connecting each chapter title with a personal story.

Overcoming is full of memorable quotes so you better have your highlighter ready when reading this book!

I am finding that "Overcoming" is a great book to have in your teaching library. I love the way Pastor Steve Mays teaches; he makes everything so easy to understand and he leaves you wanting more. I was introduced to his church, Calvary Chapel Southbay here in Gardena, CA, and I was truly amazed with his teaching; hen I returned home I looked to see what books he had written and I came across several, but decided to start within"Overcoming", since I needed help in that area right now, let's just say, I can't put this book down. I would highly recommend.

Each day life deals challenges that some people call "problems." Pastor Steve Mays has been dealt more than his fair share yet managed to overcome and thrive in spite of it. In the pages of OVERCOMING, you will gain insights and ready-made encouragement from the Scriptures to handle whatever you are facing. This book tackles thirteen key areas which throw up life barriers and God's Word gives us the tools to overcome. Each chapter is filled with straight-forward insight and instruction. For example in the chapter on overcoming suffering, Mays writes, "The Bible promises us that we will be comforted in our suffering. It does not promise that we will always understand our suffering, nor does it promise that God will deliver us from pain, suffering or even death; but it does promise He will always be with us." (Page 34) Every chapter includes simple personal application questions for the reader called Points to Ponder.

The final pages of OVERCOMING asks, "What are you trying to overcome in your life today? Have you been trying to change but feel like you keep slamming your head against a wall? Do you keep failing? Have you tried every 12-step program, self-help book and positive thinking exercise there is, only to come up short? I want to encourage you to start with the right foundation--a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Only God, working in and through you, can give you the victory of overcoming." (Page 169)

I recommend you read this book with your yellow highlighter in hand--and apply the principles to your everyday life.
