From the Author
We survived a horrific encounter with environmental illness. Because of her exposure to several toxic substances, Heather became so ill she lost her tolerance to all food. Her weight plummeted sixty pounds in three months, until finally she became a bedridden invalid who had to be fed by tube. Myrna was the caregiver during this year and a half ordeal. In spite of Heather's rapid decline, most doctors we encountered told us, "It's all in her head.". But we refused to believe this diagnosis and together worked to achieve Heather's recovery. We succeeded to such a degree that Heather is able to enjoy a newly-found, superior level of health. Today she is hiking, traveling, skiing, camping, and working.
Living through that experience gave us a chilling insight into the dangers the modern environment poses to our health. However, our greatest concern is for the number of people we meet who are suffering from environmental illness, many without any idea of what is happening to them. Because of their plight, we are determined to create public awareness about the prevalence of environmental illness and the devastation it can cause. With that in mind we wrote our first publication, The Toxic Labyrinth. Although it is our story, many have identified with our emotional and physical struggle, from the perspective of the person who suffers and the family that tries to understand. Since then we have written three more publications in this field, Overcoming Environmental Illness, Strategies for Success: A product guide for the allergic and environmentally sensitive, and our newest release, Environmental Health Nursing: Planning patient care for environmental illness & multiple chemical sensitivity
But we are more than two women who have overcome adversity. Heather has a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. As a Registered Nurse in both Canada and the United States, she has worked for a number of years with terminally ill, pediatric cancer patients. Myrna has a Bachelor of Education, a Masters in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, and is an experienced business woman who has developed many educational and self-help programs. Using our backgrounds in health care, education, and business, plus information from ongoing research, we have developed Overcoming Environmental Illness just for you.
We hope our program will provide support and make an overwhelming illness more manageable. So think of us as friends who understand why recovery is very important to you, and how much you want to feel well again.
