Overcoming an Imperfect Boss is an excellent guidebook for tackling the most difficult situations that occur on a regular basis. Karin Hurt hits the real challenges head on, with straight talk and practical advice. You will feel like like you’re having a conversation with a trusted, wise friend. Helpful for leaders at all levels, I recommended it to senior leaders and sent a copy to my niece who recently entered the workforce. Companies should give this wonderful book to every new employee. It will save everyone a lot of grief.

Written from a lifetime of experience with imperfect bosses and (perhaps more importantly) AS an imperfect boss, Karin Hurt's book is as near a 'must read' for today's frontline and midlevel managers, supervisors and team leaders as anything out there.

Coming in at just under 100 pages, you will find a gem of practical 'how to' wisdom on every page. Every tip helps you fulfill the title's promise: Overcoming an Imperfect Boss - a practical guide to building a better relationship with your boss. (I always appreciate it when a book provides exactly what it promises on the cover!)

One of the features that makes Hurt's book so compelling is her own vulnerability. This is not 'bleeding on the page'...rather, she is real, transparent, and recognizes that everyone one of us: you, your boss, her, her boss, (and me!) are all imperfect human beings trying to do our best.

That paradigm is the foundation of every tip Hurt shares with you. You won't find a drop of arrogance - just a sincere attempt to share tools that she learned through her own years serving beside, with, and as "boss" (a term neither Hurt nor I usually care for, but which works within the book).

I share Hurt's passion for frontline and midlevel leaders - the realities are challenging and, compared to C-Suite level leaders, there are relatively fewer resources to assist them in their journey. This is one of the good ones. A quick sampling of the answers you'll find in this power-packed book:

What to do when your boss is disengaged...
What to do when your boss likes and it's affecting your relationship with peers...
How do you get your boss's trust?
What if the boss really is a jerk? - (Don't skip straight to this one. I promise that you're better off reading to it...

I really enjoyed this book. So crisp, practical and easy-to-implement, it could only have been written by someone who has truly lived an extensive leadership journey. Don't be fooled by the book's slim profile - Karin Hurt packs each page with practical advice. Every page gets directly to the point and then moves on. In fact, there are times when I would have liked to read a bit more of Karin’s wisdom and philosophy on the page, similar to the very thought-provoking blog posts she writes on her "Let's Grow Leaders" site.

This book is priced in such a way that I could see these being handed out at new employee orientation sessions. Or, for those work team leaders serious about fostering strong relationships with their direct reports - keep a stack of these in your desk - to show your team that you are genuine about working productively.

I found the book to be an excellent resource. Each chapter provided relevant approaches and advise towards managing up and quite frankly managing our own perspective thru preparation when interacting with imperfect bosses. This book should be part of every growing leader/professional's must read list.

I have seen first hand how dynamic and energic the author's leadership style is. I plan to read this not only as an employee but to see my own imperfections as a manager! I am sure I will hone some skills and learn new approaches in a few areas while learning/improving on communication styles.

"Overcoming an Imperfect Boss" is a great book about building and keeping important business relationships. I found the title a little deceiving because the message in the book is an all encompassing guide to maneuvering the professional landscape. I liked the positive message so much I picked up a couple of extra copies to hand off to others in my organization if they are struggling with a certain relationship or looking to build their professional network. If you are a mentor this is a great book to pass along to your mentees.

I found it an easy read, easy to finish in an afternoon and it really brings the reader back-to-basics and helps them see potentials that may not have been apparent from the start. This book is a great add for any young leader just starting out and provides the concrete principles that establish strong foundations for our future leaders.

Exercises throughout the book help the reader dig deep into their own mind to find solutions that will work in their unique situation. I found these exercises helpful and well thought out by the author. They encouraged me to find alternative solutions to improve some of the relationships in my life and see things from someone else's point of view.

I have read many self-help and career enhancement books over the years and this one will stay in my personal library. Working as a subordinate, leader, life-coach, and friend, I look forward to sharing this book with others as they work toward their professional and networking goals.
