Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

More women than men are affected by incontinence, and most sufferers mistakenly believe that the condition is a normal part of aging. Thus, this slim book will be welcomed for its no-nonsense, practical advice. Readers will learn how the urinary system works and how and when to seek professional help. Dierich, who heads the Center for Bladder and Pelvic Dysfunction at the University of Minnesota's Department of Urologic Surgery, and Froe, one of only 75 female urologists in the United States, explain the different types of urinary incontinence: stress, urge, overflow, functional, iatrogenic, and mixed. They explain how to keep a diary, recording type and amount of fluid intake, and how often and in what situation incontinence occurs. While recommending simple steps to prevent leakage, the authors also advise that any leakage should be evaluated by a professional. They explain in detail the different types of treatment (drugs, Kegel exercises, biofeedback, muscle therapy, pessaries, and surgery) and delineate the advantages and disadvantages of each. Rounding out the book are chapters on male incontinence, bedwetting, the special problems faced by people with neurologic problems, interstitial cystitis, and dysfunctional voiding. Highly recommended.

This review is from: Overcoming Incontinence: A Straightforward Guide to Your Options (Paperback)
This book captured it all for me: I finally understand -- and can treat -- what has long been a physical problem for me -- and apparently for many others. What really astounds me, though, is that this is no technical or arrogantly medical story -- it is a rich, textured, honest, and practical guide to incontinence. Bravo, Dr. Froe, you have changed my life.
