4.0 out of 5 stars Healing the Emotional Sources of Overeating, June 9, 2011
This review is from: Overcoming the Legacy of Overeating : How to Change Your Negative Eating Patterns (Paperback)
This book offers helpful insights to address the root causes of overeating which, for most people, are emotional. The first half of the book offers chapters which explore possible emotional links to overeating for the reader to explore. It's unlikely you'll identify with every single one, but may find a couple of chapters that really resonate with your own particular situation. I really liked the emphasis on healing and forgiving, ourselves and others, as part of the process of recovery. Programs that don't address the emotional scars and the underlying messages we learned that cause overeating are destined for short-term success.

Although not all people will like them, I also found the suggested affirmations & exercises surprisingly helpful! I've always been skeptical and dismissive of affirmations which remind me of that dreadful Saturday Night Live skit. They sound so cheesy and ineffective to me, but I gave them a try for a couple of weeks and have been pleasantly astonished at the results. Not exactly miraculous, but quite noticeable and positive enough that I'll continue them.

I was less interested in the nutrition section. Many people who have been obsessed with food and dieting know quite a bit about nutrition, but for those who don't, it may offer some helpful insights. I am wary of the suggestion that candida is at the root of all one's health problems and that sugar must be entirely cut out of one's diet - I'm very skeptical of any recovery plan for overeating that imposes strict guidelines that are likely to set one up for failure - but perhaps for some people out there candida has serious negative consequences for their health... just not me.

Finally, I love this book in combination with Geneen Roth's Breaking Free from Emotional Eating.

This review is from: Overcoming the Legacy of Overeating : How to Change Your Negative Eating Patterns (Paperback)
I had a problem with Overeating for a period of time and got this book. I was surprised to read that they blame your Mom / or your parents for Over eating as an adult. While this is true in some circumstances, it is not true for everyone. My parents always gave me Huge Servings of Food and told me to Clean my plate, even if I wasn't hungry anymore. My Mom would always Reward me with my Favorite Foods when I was Upset or sick. In my situation my parents did make me over eat as an Adult, but some people just do this because they are stressed or Bored.
