Product Description

The statistics are powerful and alarming: Perhaps as many as 6 million Americans suffer from night eating syndrome, or NES—a newly identified eating disorder which describes behavior patterns in which an individual obsessively consumes more than half of his or her daily caloric intake after eight o’clock in the evening. More significant is the further finding that more than 33 percent of morbidly obese individuals—persons who are 100 or more pounds overweight—are affected by this disorder. Experts agree that NES shares characteristic of not only eating disorders but also sleep and mood disorders. Sufferers tend to exhibit symptoms such as feelings of anxiety and guilt, insomnia or interrupted sleep. Typical NES behaviors include absent appetite during the day, a consistent pattern of eating more food after dinner than during the meal itself, and recurrent episodes of waking and eating throughout the night. This book, the first written specifically to people struggling with NES, offers a step-by-step strategy for managing and overcoming this disorder.

Readers will first learn to identify the signs of NES, and then use journaling exercises to discover what automatic thoughts surround their night eating. Having identified the problematic behaviors, the reader learns how to break the patterns with healthier food choices, more structured mealtimes, and a series of relaxation and visualization techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought I was alone with this., July 30, 2006
By M. Meuse-Allard "Bast of Books" (Lowell, MA United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This book was amazing to me. With just the intro and first chapter read, I was able to adjust my behavior enough to minimize eating long into the nite and early A.M. And that was just a beginning. It took me 40+ years to find out this is not just my problem. If you know someone or if that someone is you, come out of hiding and get control over your life. This effects all aspects of life. To find this, was overwhelming and freeing.

2.0 out of 5 stars OVERCOMING NIGHT EATING SYNDROME: MY REVIEW, August 13, 2005
By Night muncher (New Jersey) - See all my reviews
Easy read but only somewhat more informative than the plethora of webpages on the topic. As I read through the book I found out a lot about symptoms and that I wasn't very unique in this problem. However, I didn't find any major insights by the way of a solution to the problem. The disorder is too recently recognized to have a lot of useful information about it. I just lock up the food at night.

5.0 out of 5 stars not alone, September 8, 2006
By Ellen T. Ochs (jackson nj) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I have struggled with night eating for many years. When I would speak to my doctor about this he was very unaware of this type of eating. I am very pleased that this has been researched. I believe that most people were unaware that we were not the only ones eating at night. The book was a huge help to me.
Thank you,
Ellen Ochs
