3.0 out of 5 stars Useful but not enough
While I liked what this book offered, it did not offer enough. I wanted something that gave me a great deal more information and insight and not just a few basics and exercises. What the authors do, however, they do well. I like how they write. After I read this book I read Diagonally Parked in a Parallel Universe which I found much more enlightening, insightful, personal...

This review is from: Overcoming Panic, Anxiety and Phobias: New Strategies to Free Yourself from Worry and Fear (Paperback)
A practical and engaging book which contains specific scientifically based cognitive-behavioral strategies to help people with panic, excess worry, social fears such as public speaking, being in social groups, phobias such as fear of flying, driving, etc. to manage their problems step-by step. There are fourteen stories from people who have suffered these anxiety problems and recovered. It's particularly helpful to know that you're not alone. The book is clearly written, has forms to record and help manage scary thoughts and body sensations, learn to face feared situations and manage any setbacks. There is a chapter to help family and friends better understand how to help. This is an outstanding book and will give help and comfort to it's readers. The authors are trained counselers who specialize in the treatment of anxiety disorders.C. Barr Taylor,M.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Director of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic, Stanford University Medical Center states "Shirley Babior and Carol Goldman have written a terrific handbook to help the many millions of people who suffer from panic and other anxiety disorders. Their approach is sound and effective."

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidelines for people who suffer from phobias, August 26, 1999

This review is from: Overcoming Panic, Anxiety and Phobias: New Strategies to Free Yourself from Worry and Fear (Paperback)
It surprises me that there is such a detailed book which helps me cope with my social phobia. I feel much more confident now, after reading it. What is so special about the book is that it does not only help readers recover from fears but also help them find the root of the problem step by step. Besides, it explains clearly why people have anxiety problems. I highly recommend this book to those who find their fears very disturbing and want a complete recovery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not the best, January 2, 2002

This review is from: Overcoming Panic, Anxiety and Phobias: New Strategies to Free Yourself from Worry and Fear (Paperback)
Although this book provides useful information about cognitive (thought) and relaxation strategies that help reduce anxiety, it is not the best available. A better self-help book is THE ANXIETY & PHOBIA WORKBOOK (3rd. Ed.) by Edmund Bourne. Bourne provides more detailed information about and a wider variety of relaxation techniques as well as more information about the rationale behind and research support for the techniques.

5.0 out of 5 stars Insurmountable Help, January 3, 2001
This review is from: Overcoming Panic, Anxiety and Phobias: New Strategies to Free Yourself from Worry and Fear (Paperback)
I read the book, and am fortunate enough to reside in the same town where Shirley Babior practices. I can't say enough about how she, and the advice in her book, have changed my life. I refer to the book very often because it is an ongoing process to overcome difficult Panic and Anxiety disorder. This book saved me from a future that was certain to be wracked with a lot of unnecessary worry, fear, phobia, and anxieties I thought would never end!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Noteworthy primer on addressing anxiety and phobias, May 25, 2001
This review is from: Overcoming Panic, Anxiety and Phobias: New Strategies to Free Yourself from Worry and Fear (Paperback)
This is a small book but it has all the essentials one needs to address anxiety and phobias. Babior and Goldman have done a fine job condensing necessary strategies and providing examples.

I knew a brilliant young man who suffered from panic attacks who did not cope and finally committed suicide. So unnecessary! If only he could have read or rather "worked through" this book. And this is what this book requires from you. I just hope that books such as this one could demistify perceptions regarding panic, anxiety and phobias. It could result in creating a general acceptance and understanding of these conditions - saving lifes!
