Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
About a million people a month will exhibit symptoms of panic disorder, state social worker Weinstock and freelance medical writer Gilman, quoting statistics from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). The authors methodically present four detailed case studies of women who suffer from panic disorder and other related physical and psychological problems. Each psychotherapeutic modality or medication used in treatment receives an in-depth discussion that remains entirely accessible and understandable to the educated lay reader. Bibliographic references represent current studies in mainstream medical journals, and a substantial guide to NIMH-supported research programs and professional and self-help organizations is included. Despite the emphasis on women, men who suffer from panic disorder will also find valuable advice here. Highly recommended for public libraries and consumer health collections. In her updated and revised edition of Panic Free (Barclay House, 1995), Freeman, a former agoraphobic, psychotherapist, and director of Los Angeles's Open Doors Institute, writes insightfully but less analytically than Weinstock and Gilman and pays more attention to alternative intervention. Though blurbed by the president of Columbia-Pacific University, a California diploma mill, and offering no journal references more recent than the mid-1980s, Panic Free does include charts, checklists, and other self-help tools. Despite the book's subtitle, a chapter called "When Medication Is Necessary" is entirely neutral in tone, and a wide variety of drugs are described. Recommended for public libraries where demand warrants.AMartha Stone, Massachusetts General Hosp. Lib., Boston

5.0 out of 5 stars A supportive resource for anxiety sufferers., June 10, 1998
By A Customer
Gives women, young or 'senior' a genuine feeling of hope. Fromthe very first pages of Lorna Weinstock and Eleanor Gilman'scomforting and comprehensive book about dealing with anxiety disorders, the reader experiences a renewed sense of optimism and immense relief. For those of us who have labored with anxiety, the 'fear of fear',the case studies ring familiar and are a great comfort. Information re medications and'current practice' therapies afford one the chance to make informed choices and participate in self recovery with a growing sense of control. I highly recommend this thoughtfully written guide to WELLNESS!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book!, August 20, 2007
This is an excellent book, reading through other women experiences helped me so much, I felt like I wasn't the only weird one feeling like that, and there's other people out there feeling like me. It's a wonderful book, I always pick it up now and then, when I'm starting to feel the panic coming back and the unreasonable thoughts. I highly recomend it. For everybody out there struggling with any kind of panic disorder, be patient with yourself, you'll feel better!
