Book Description

June 1, 2008 1886039887 978-1886039889 3rd

Prescription drug addiction is now one of the nation’s most serious drug problems. More Americans are abusing controlled prescription drugs more than cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, and heroin combined.  With the exception of marijuana, prescription painkillers are the most widely abused drug in the U.S.

Many who are addicted to prescription drugs are “unwitting addicts”—they have no history of drug abuse, but become addicted after taking a drug for legitimate reasons. Rod Colvin understands this problem. His 35-year old brother died as a result of his long-term addiction to painkillers and tranquilizers.

Drawing from his personal experience and his background as a counselor, Colvin offers help to those suffering from addiction as well as their families. In this new, third edition, Colvin discusses dynamics of addiction and the newest treatment options; he also offers compelling personal stories from addicts who describe their journeys into recovery. These anecdotes are accompanied by advice from addiction medicine specialists.

This review is from: Overcoming Prescription Drug Addiction: A Guide to Coping and Understanding (Addicus Nonfiction Books) (Paperback)
this is a good book as it tells you all the basic information. but it doesn't talk much about medications to treat painkiller addiction. what if you can't afford to go somewhere for treatment?
but it was easy to read and has alot of information

4.0 out of 5 stars Paper preview gives you a lot more than kindle FREE sample, January 11, 2012
By
I read the preview of the paperback version of this book and liked it. It skipped around so I thought I'd try the Kindle version. So I downloaded the "read first chapter free" option. It was so brief and NOT the first chapter in its entirety as promised. I wonder how many other Kindle Free Samples are that abbreviated. Anyway, if I was rating on the Kindle version I wouldn't even consider buying it and would give it one star. But with the paper preview it looks like a good read that I will purchase, paperback version please !
