Book Description

‘Why are all the lights off?’ I thought as I got out of the car and walked to the door. Devin’s car is here, I know he can’t be sleep already. Well, if he is, that’s about to change. This was going to be a kid free romantic night. I put the key in the lock, turned the knob and open the door. As I entered the house all of my items along with myself were knocked on the floor. I was sure someone had broken into our home, and robbed us.
“Devin!!!” I shouted as I grabbed the side of my face from being smacked.
“Where have you been? You were supposed to be here over an hour ago? I know you’ve been out with one of your little boyfriends. You ole good for nothing whore!” Devin shouted, looking at me with rage in his eyes.
SMACK!!!
There I was getting hit again for maybe the thousandth time. I thought we had gotten past the abuse, but obviously not “What have you been doing? Have you been drinking?” I asked him.
My face was stinging and burning from the slaps I had just received. As I picked myself up off of the floor, I looked toward the living room where I saw the unexpected. I rubbed my eyes making sure my vision was clear as to what my eyes were seeing. More tears started to run down my face very fast. I began to ask myself what went wrong for him to get back into this place? Three lines of white powder lay on the glass coffee table. It was a beautiful table that had been given to us by his mother about a year ago. “Devin, are you serious!”
My eyes were already blood shot red from crying, but that didn’t faze him, he had seen me cry, what seemed like over a million times. “Cocaine?! I asked looking in a confusing way. “You were clean for almost a year. Don’t you remember all the hell we went through before?”
Now, I was ready to fight. I stood in his face and pulled my arm back with my fist balled, ready to punch him in his face. He grabbed my fist as I swung at him. One after the other I tried, but he was too strong. “You are so stupid!” I shouted again. “I went by Savannah’s house to see how she was doing? I was only there for maybe twenty minutes!”
Devin looked at me and said, “I don’t know why you’re always hanging around that slut. Most friends are sluts together; I don’t know where you’ve been. You should’ve brought your butt home that’s what you should’ve done.”
“Devin, I’m leaving, I can’t do this with you anymore.”
“Go ahead and leave! Where are you going to go? To your sister house again, for what, two months this time?”
“Who’s going to want you? Ain’t no man trying to take care of you and you must be crazy if you trying to get somebody else to be my girls’ father.”
“Devin, it’s not about a man. I don’t have to go through this.”
“Carmen, you act like this has been happening all the time. This is one little mistake and you know it’s been a while since I hit you.”
“Devin, you shouldn’t be hitting me at all. I will not go back to letting the girl’s watch you beat me up.”
“Baby, I’ve been so stressed, trying to find a job. It hurts me that you have to work all of these hours at work, paying most of these bills. I slipped Carmen,” he said while rubbing my hand. “I slipped this once, but you don’t have to worry about it happening again.”
“Devin, how did you get the money?” I asked pulling my hand away.
Immediately, I ran upstairs to our bed room and looked in the closet for my old purse that I hid in the closet behind a shoe box. I wasn’t surprised that he had found the stash that I had been saving. I don’t know why I didn’t think of a better place, or why I didn’t open a different bank account from the one we shared. I had been saving that money for a rainy day. It was the money I made from working at the club. In three months I had saved fifteen hundred dollars. I knew he was lying. “Devin!!!!”
By that time I was running back down the stairs to the living room area. “There is only eight hundred dollars in here! You are so selfish! You’re always thinking of yourself!”

Just finished reading the book and all I have to say is Wow! This is actually an eye opener for many and has hit home especially for me in so many ways. Although it may seem that you forgive, you have to truly seek God and ask for his guidance. I find myself holding grudges for things that has happened to me in the past but I know I have to take it one day at a time, nothing happens overnight. Evora Bentley you are an Inspiration and I hope God continue to use you to help others because Faith without Works is dead.
