This book tells the story of how the very idea of 'two cultures' - the so-called divorce between science and the humanities - was a creation of the modern world-system that was consolidated in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by the establishment of the faculties and disciplines of the modern university system.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating philosophical study, October 19, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
It's interesting to see how particular philosophical strains have alternately aligned themselves with the humanities or the sciences over the centuries, and how the split in the humanities and sciences came about. If you didn't really understand how Ph.D descended from being a Doctor of Philosophy, no book will clear it up better than this.
