Review

"An excellent guide and workbook to assist therapists in the treatment of pathological gambling."--PsycCRITIQUES

"[T]here are hundreds of books available on the topic of pathological gambling. Some are meant for researchers, some for clinicians, and others for the patients and families themselves. The majority of the self-help workbooks for sale, though, are not evidenced-based and have not been tested in a rigorous scientific manner. These two companion books--first-authored by one of the leading clinicians and researchers in the world on pathological gambling--are quite different. . . the materials presented in both books are accurate, easy-to-read, and applicable to every subtype of problem and pathological gambler. . .These two books would be excellent starter materials to any gambling treatment program or counselor who is beginning to gain experience in the management of pathological gambling."--Journal of Gambling Issues

My son just completed a 28 day inpatient rehab for gambling in Louisiana. This workbook is a lot like what they did. He is a changed man. His life was out of control before and family was affected. Please get help if your loved one has this problem. Search on Internet for rehab places. I do recommend Louisiana's. This book is good. The workbook may seem simple but is effective. This is a disease that needs treatment. The compulsive gambler can not control themselves. The gambling industry and our government needs to have more treatment readily available for people. Get involved!

Utilising the most up to date research results, this self-help source provides an excellent basis for understanding the etiology, progression and treatment of gambling behaviour. Presented in a highly accessible fashion, this text will be of direct benefit to people wanting help to curb their risk-taking activities and to support workers alike, set in a cognitive-behavioural context.

To develop the skills to counsel patients suffering from a gambling addiction, Alexander J. Ariano, Mental Health Counselor, joined a training class to obtain the license. Part of the requirements of this course was to read and become familiar with the book by Rober tLadouceur, Author: Overcoming your pathological gambling workbook (Treatments that work).

Gambling is now part of our lives in South Florida and its addiction interferes with the ability of many to appropriately deal with family or social / work life demands and obligations.

As Alex Ariano explained, the book reveals the inherent problem people have once they believe that gambling can become a way out of financial trouble. There is always the hope that a person can beat the odds and become wealthy.

The book teaches how to take back control of our lives and offers examples of effective treatment to control the desire to gamble away hard earned resources. The first step is to recognize the addiction and then to want to do something about it, once the person is willing to work on themselves to change, there is hope on how to deal with overcoming the pathological attractin to gambling.
