Editorial Reviews

It exceeds every expectation Matt's highly anticipated new album is finally here, and it delivers. It exceeds every expectation. As one industry insider put it, it "crackles with energy." A musical testament to God's overflowing blessings, its 14 new songs speak powerfully of what it means to be Christian in the third millennium. Cool, playful, driving sound The title track is a cool, easy-paced piece inviting God in his word and sacramental presence to overflow in us. Bursting with joy, "Resurrection Day" jumps and hops. Its playful, driving sound and unforgettable refrain draw you in to savor the freedom Christ won for us. A breathless, thrilling ride Matt really cuts loose on "Everything You've Done." A celebration of God's gifts, it starts out innocently enough. But suddenly he doubles its two-beat rock tempo and you re whisked away on a breathless, thrilling ride that ends with a flurry of guitars and musical fireworks. You can't help but "dance for the Lord." Lush, alternative-rock arrangements "Timeless" is a brilliant adaptation of Suzanne Toolan's "Jesus Christ, Yesterday, Today and Forever." Matt weaves the refrain from that haunting, Taizé-style song into his own lush, alternative-rock arrangement. Intense, full-blooded covers Two of the biggest surprises are "Come to the Water" and "Adoration." You just wouldn't expect to find "Tantum Ergo," a traditional Eucharistic hymn, and a 1978 John Foley song here. But Matt pulls it off and then some. His intense, electric, full-blooded versions take these classics to a new level without squandering any of the original reverence. Pop masterpieces "Hear and Now" is a pop masterpiece assuring us that God's kingdom is here "in our midst," not some pie in the sky. Opening with a wispy, acoustic guitar, "Unwavering" eases you in to rest in God's "unwavering hand." With Overflow, Matt's visionary songwriting once again leads listeners closer to the heart of God.

5.0 out of 5 stars Contemporary Christian Rock At It's Best, June 7, 2007
This review is from: Overflow (Audio CD)
This is a great contemporary christian rock album. All the words you would use to describe charicteristics of rock apply to this album and his previous work, Welcome to Life (2003). My personal connection is to the early and mid-70's. He would have been a success then as I believe he is now. Very clean recording; both simple and complex arrangements, accoustic and electric combined. Good use of synthesizers to create layers of sound that are very satisfying. Drums/percussion complement everything and are used to develop songs equally with melodies. Matt is an extremely talented and versatile musician...vocals, guitars, keyboards. His skill on instruments is among the very best, regardless of generation. And his song writing and lyrics demonstrate a deep appreciation for sacred scripture. His work is best appreciated as a whole, but individual songs can be listened to again and again without becoming tiresome. Songs are developed as individual works and they all fit together to paint a picture of a deep love of God and the human experience. At times, it blows me away. I can hardly wait for the next album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth Buying, April 9, 2008
This review is from: Overflow (Audio CD)
"Overflow" is the third CD by Matt Maher. Though I don't quite like it as much as his previous releases, "Overflow" is definitely worth buying! Maher is a very talented musician and song writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overflowing with the Spirit, February 13, 2011
This review is from: Overflow (Audio CD)
This is such a joyous album - even the slower songs are bursting with an intense love for Jesus. Listening to it makes you want to "sing with joy," as Maher himself puts it in "Resurrection Day" (my favorite song on the album). Listen to it!
