Book Description

October 11, 2005
Amusing and quirky, the Overheard series is a uniquely designed record of conversational snippets heard in public settings. Overheard at the Museum, the first in the series, captures the spectrum of humor, the irreverence, and the appreciation for Fine Art that museum-goers display. Revealing quotes are paired with compelling black-and-white photographs that show onlokers engaged in their individual and universal museum experiences.

Soul-baring, intimate, sordid, chock full of wit and wisdom, it's ear candy for the eavesdropper. These books are sure to become icons of popular culture.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny...but, September 8, 2004
This review is from: Overheard at the Museum (Hardcover)
The book IS hilarious, but as mentioned above, it can be read in less than 5 minutes. I guess it depends on one's sense of humour - i open that book once ever couple of months just to laugh at the quirky quotes, but i don't know if i would buy it to take up extra shelf space in my library.

but not very funny. I was somewhat dissapointed with the "book", but nevertheless might be for some people but not for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars I wish I had written this book!, June 23, 2003

This review is from: Overheard at the Museum (Hardcover)
I had often thought that it would be fun to write a book like this, filled with overheard comments. Then I spotted this little gem in a Cincinnati museum.

The first thing to say about this book is that it's a quick and easy read. I could have read the whole thing in a matter of minutes while I stood in the museum's gift shop. I stopped myself because I knew that I'd buy it from Amazon.com (better price), and I figured that it would be more fun to read most of it when I received my own copy. At the same time, Judith Henry is not content to reach the so-called "lowest common denominator." The content demonstrates that she does indeed credit her readers with intelligence.

The book's content is also its most fun attribute. Obviously, because the comments in it were overheard inside an art museum, most of the remarks are reactions to art, and some of those are quite hilarious. From time to time, though, you will find a comment that someone has made to his/her friend that might have been provoked by the artwork, but which has little or nothing to do with its artistic merit (imagine something like, "The lines and colors here remind me of Aunt Mary's pasta salads," although that specific observation is merely an example that I just made up). In short, as one who is very fond of visiting museums, I can certainly see myself overhearing the types of statements that are in this small volume.

I have since gone on to purchase two other titles in the same series, OVERHEARD AT THE BOOKSTORE and OVERHEARD WHILE SHOPPING, both by the same author. It is my considered opinion that this book, OVERHEARD AT THE MUSEUM, is the best of the bunch. If you enjoy museum-going, or if you enjoy the occasional opportunity to overhear strange, unexpected, and amusing bits of conversation as you go about your daily routine, you will love this book.
