Ignore Bader,
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Overlord 2 (DVD-ROM)
I don't know what Bader is complaining about, Overlord II is an awesome game. He said the first has "tons of replay value," maybe he just played the game until he puked minions out of his eyes or something. This game is better than the first if you ask me. My only real complaint is that its short. I bought it and finished it in about 4 days, though I suppose I did play it a lot.
Kill 1000 gnomes - Don't like it, don't do it. Doesn't hurt a darn thing if you don't do it. Control Scheme - EXACTLY the same as the first game. The reason I got Overlord 2 was because I JUST got Overlord 1 and loved it. I beat Overlord 1 last Saturday and immediately got Overlord 2. Less than 3 hours after I finished the first did I start the second, so I think its fair to say that I know what I'm talking about. Controls are EXACTLY the same. As far as the enemies not attacking you, I think he's referring to when you break an enemy formation and rout them. Its not always easy, and not having them attack you is somewhat of a reward for breaking the formation. And it definately isn't ALL enemies. In fact, some of them are actually quite good at fighting, such as the acrobatic elves. They'll leap over your front lines and head for your reds and blues in the back. This game builds on the first by allowing your minions to ride mounts, gives you some seige weapons, and boats. There is even a little bit of ship to ship battle which was entertaining. And don't do what I did when I saw a boat trying to escape. I showed him my broadside trying to block him in... he rammed me. HARD. Sunk me. Fun game. Only 4 stars overall because it's relatively short.

Overlord 2 is a decent enough game in its own right with a *lot* more variation in play than the original Overlord had. The alignment system (domination v. destruction) is better than the original where you could actually be a good evil overlord. The multi-mistress concept is good, even if the execution didn't live up to my expectations. Similarly, raising minions could've been done far better. The storyline is merely passable compared to the original Overlord's well-scripted story. It is a bit short and linear compared to what's expected of world domination/demolition; more side quests and optional paths would've fleshed it out nicely. Additionally, the minion control occasionally goes buggy in switching between orders, sweeping and camera control. (Press Esc and then resume the game.)
On the whole, though, it provided me with the level of amusement I expected for the price I paid.

Overlord 2 was disappointing after playing overlord 1. The plot was weaker, and their just weren't as many funny moments as the first game. If you get overlord 1, you won't be missing anything if you don't get overlord 2.
Pros: * Better graphics. * Game play. * Really cool looking base of operations. Cons: * Less humorous. * Very linear levels. * Not as good story telling. * Spider Pit level/puzzle(I almost gave up at this point). * Mounts that aren't useful except when they force you to use them for a specific puzzle. I made it through the entire ending without using the mounts at all without trouble. * No arena pit in your dungeon. * Extremely large tower of evil that has loading zones between area's that you need to get to on a regular basis. In summary, if you don't have the first overlord, get it. If you do have the first overlord... just remember that this one isn't as good.

This is a rare game style, because not only are you the bad guy, but you are a seriously bad dude, and not in the same moronic way as you would in the Grand Theft Auto series. What I mean is that you play a Sauron-esque Lich-like creature with great magical powers of mental domination and typical demonic power. You are placed in a Tolkien-esque world that literally does not leave a single cliche out to make fun of. This game is by far the best game I have played and I own 45 games at the moment. I am not even a strategy style gamer. This is a light-hearted game with its humor but it is very sadistic as well. Probably not the greatest game for kids due to the crude adult humor and the whole murdering entire villages and ensclaving the human race, but there is not blood and it is light-hearted in that you are the most powerful being in the world yet you command a horde (up to 50!!) of what could only be called Goblins from J.R.R. Tolkien's fantasy series The Lord of the Rings.
This game seeks to make fun of every cliche while itself plays out those cliches at the same time. It is just hilarious and sick, yet not too sadistic. You command up to 50 golblins who have the ability to either be a great fighter, great swimmer, shoot fireballs/immune to fire, or stealth/immune to poison. All of them are fighters, but the great fighters are by far the toughest. All others will drown except the swimmers, yet all will be burned except the fire goblins and all will be poisoned except the stealth/poison goblins. So you see, there is a lot of strategy involved. Each type of goblin is earned in a sequence and allow for progression. For instance, certain areas will have water so you cannot get by unless you have the blue goblins who can swim, etc etc. A wonderful game and the secon din the series. This game is much more compatible than the first one which catered to Nvidia GPU's. All overlord games are intensive on CPU's due to the intense processes involved, so make sure your PC is strong enough. 5 Stars!

Gnarl and the Overlord are back. Well, not quite back, but you'll get to figure that all out.
Gameplay is very similar with some welcome tweaks: 1. Your minions can now be upgraded at their hive which makes them tougher overall. 2. Minions gain levels as the get more experience. 3. Dead minions can be resurrected at the cost of 'newby' minions, but this gets expensive if you're trying to revive a high-level one. 4. Three (!) mistresses. 5. Many more options for new weapons and armor, though the purely 'custom' option is gone. (This seemed to mostly confuse ppl in the first game, so not an issue for most people.) 6. Still have an "evil" vs. "really evil" though one is considerably better long term than the other. (You can figure it out. People killed in this game stay dead.) 7. Plenty of mini-games, most of which are quite fun. 8. Brown/Red/Green minions gain mounts. I didn't find the mounts that useful, but they're ok. Story, graphics and score are all as good as the original, though less interactions/comments from the mistresses than last game. Which is to say the writers have a wicked sense of humour and hopefully they keep it up! Game is more graphically demanding though. With a full horde of minions plus dominated humans, game occasionally slowed down. (T8300 w/ nVidia 8600M GT in 1400x900). No notable bugs or crashes, which is rare nowadays for an unpatched game right out of the box. I personally didn't have any issues with the controls, worked just like the first game. Lots of fun. Highly recommended. Some of the best fun I've had out of a game since Overlord.

Great sequel to the original Overlord. Overlord II was less expensive on Amazon. When I bought the first one, I was able to download it from Steam for 4.99. However, you can find Overlord specials now and again. Steam had both for 9.99 months ago. If I had known then what I don now about the game I would have purchased both. The game is just fun to play. The minions have great personalities and just do things that are off the wall. It will literally have you laughing out loud. I will say, hopefully with out spoiling it. You get to choose your own destiny, whether that be evil or just really evil. After all, you are a deity from the bowels of the earth and looking for some retribution.
The only difficulty I had was using the mouse to guide a group of minions. Once I was able to do that effectively, it was game on. So if you love role playing and laughing this is a great one to get. But play the first Overlord prior. You will appreciate the humor more.

This game is very fun for mindless, senseless minion violence. Like overlord 1, you control a gaggle (this number can be 5-50) of minions to do your bidding and wreak destruction upon the land.
Unlike the first game, this time the setting is in the height of the roman empire rather than medieval times. This game has made massive improvements over its predecessor including better AI, bigger battles, more enemies, and the ability to have all minions except browns not suck! Another benefit is minion health improves based on a rudimentary level system, that way minions aren't determined solely on the goofy junk they pick up from battles. Another thing is there is now more of a magic system other than burn things and make minions angry. The downside to this game though is this: to get 100% completes it takes an awful lot of effort and time, you can't customize weapons and armor anymore, and the overlord tower is too big for the things that you want to accomplish. The last complaint I have is the enemies/bosses aren't as creative in this game as its previous title, plus there's no expansion pack to get where you can torture said bosses in a mini hell. I would recommend this game to most everyone who plays games. it's smart, dark, funny, and a great time.

Beautiful New Environments, Same Problems From the First,

Overlord II puts you back in the evil boots of an tyrannical oppressor commanding a horde of bloodthirsty minions ready to wreak havoc on the local unsuspecting populace. As a sequel from the first game, there are some additions such as new weaponry, environments, abilities, and battlefield weapons like catapults. Unfortunately, the game also comes with its weak points. I found the game to be somewhat buggy and even worse, the upgrade system is complicated, expensive and time consuming.
Starting off with the good, Overlord II introduces a brand new campaign and a new lord to lead the minions. You new dominion brings you to some amazingly beautiful and detailed environments ranging from magical forests, to beautiful islands, to a magnificent coliseum. You get to face new enemies which require cunning tactics and even have the addition of new handy mounted units. The story also brings the classic humor associated with being evil and a decent story line to go with it. In the game you will find some challenging puzzles to can be solved using a few different techniques and tactics. One addition I definitely like is the ability to bring high-level minions back to life, but unfortunately that tends to be more of a hassle than a benefit...which brings me to the cons. Unfortunately, the game did not make any major strides in simplifying your upgrade and managing options. The necessary upgrades such as armor, helmet (with abilities), and weaponry is still costly, in fact even more so than before. Again, there is no direct way to go and upgrade them, nor can you simply find the upgrades on the map like your minions can. The same goes for bringing back your minions from the dead. This process is expensive and time consuming and to manage both upgrades, you might find yourself going back and forth to different areas of the map to collect the necessary resources. In the game you are given some magical powers which you shouldn't expect to use often (with exception of the mind control power). These are also acquired and upgraded. Finally, you have the option of upgrading your own personal residence with some decorations which to be honest, I see no point in because you spend little to no time there. It's a bit of a waste of cash. To be honest, I didn't finish the game. Not because I didn't want to, but because I couldn't. The game can get a little buggy with your minions and even with your own character, especially at save points. Towards the end of the game on the dinosaur/dragon level, I was unable to finish the game because of a bug that occurred when I stopped playing and resumed play at a later time. It was literally impossible to continue. In the end, I definitely prefer the first game over the second for overcomplication, time consuming nonsense, and extreme bugginess. If you are going to invest in Overlord II, make sure its in the discount bin.

I thought wow, this is pretty cool, I was mesmerized by the cool graphics and gameplay. Have no idea if its better or worse than the first one, Ive only began the 2nd and frankly its pretty awesome. So much so that I decided to buy the first one to play next. I think we as gamers tend place our expectations too high when sometimes simple enjoyment should be the ultimate goal. There were just too many funny and cool cut scenes that I'll remember. No give aways but you slowly get submerged in ice after winning a huge battle at the beginning. I laughed my backside off when my little minions were wiping the ice block I was stuck in. Watching a blurry view within ice only to become clear after two of my minions wiped it clean smiling their gruesome smiles back at me was pretty laughable moment.

Great Game But A Few Issues,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Overlord 2 (DVD-ROM)
First off this game is incredibly inventive and amazingly fun when it works. You start off as a child being taunted by some other children. You fight back and in turn impress a few brown minions who then start to follow you. Once you get through this tutorial and actually become the adult overlord you go on a quest to defeat the Empire. One thing you should know is that you're basically pretty weak as a character even when you upgrade fully. The whole key to this game is to use your minions to fight for you. They can do things you can't, like going into certain areas, moving things, and a few other specialized skills. The game does an excellent job of being amusing, and ramping up the difficulty at a good rate. You want to try to keep your minions around because the more you level them up the more armor they're able to find in the harder they become to kill. If you do lose a minion you can go down to your evil tower and resurrect them, for a price. You also get to pick up three mistresses along the way and if you play your cards right decorating the castle you can even have a four-way with them. So with all this great stuff, this being one of the best games I've played in a long time, why do I have to give it a four and not a five? It's because the glitches in this game render it nearly unplayable in a couple places. One of the things you have to do is to sweep your mouse with both buttons held down to control your minions so they'll run to certain locations or perform certain actions. Sometimes this is not a big deal, but other times they refused to do what you're telling them to do, sometimes gets stuck moving and won't stop, and all the while your camera can spin out of control so you can barely see what's happening. This seems to get worse and worse the more minions you haven and by the end of the game my wife was wondering why she could hear so many swear words coming out of our computer room. It was incredibly frustrating losing my valuable minions that I had to pay to resurrect to nothing more than stupid stupid stupid AI errors. The enemy AI is another issue I had with this game. There are some interesting, I guess you'd call them physics, when multiple soldiers are in formation. They get a high defense bonus and it's much harder to take them on. If you have wolves available to you can use the Brown minions to sweep through them and break formation, or sometimes the Reds can on fire, but much of the time they just banned their and wait for you to pick the best way to take them out. I thought it was just happen in the very beginning is sort of tutorial, but even toward the end they just stood there and took whatever I wanted to send at them. I don't know, it just sapped a bit of the fun for me that they didn't attack more actively. This could seriously be one of the most awesome games I've ever played, if it weren't for the horrible controls, many glitches, suicidal minions, and lackluster AI. By the end of the game I was just trying to leave my guys behind to do as much as I could on my own because they're just so frustrating I couldn't take it anymore. However, even with all its faults, it's still one of the best games I have bought in years. --Update-- I just finished the game. The last level and end boss were so much fun! Just a tip, focus on your armor instead of your weapon...you're not really going to need it. Also, finally a good use for the Greens. They even worked better than the Reds. The little assassins tear the last boss stage a new one! |
