Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Asher, president of a resume service, thinks that job seekers are like small businesses with a product to sell. He offers six steps toward "working happiness"; for each, he provides tips, techniques, examples, and performance standards. He also offers lists like "Nine Ways To Get Past Gatekeepers" and "Ten Sources for Networking Contacts." Rather than trying to compete with other career - change titles like Ronald L. Krannich's Careering and Re-Careering for the 1990s (Impact, 1989), Asher provides a nice complement, advocating an aggressive marketing campaign for developing leads, networking, and closing the deal. A strong bibliography and resource list include the telephone numbers of major libraries' reference desks. Asher ( Overnight Resume , Ten Speed Pr., 1990) does not promise overnight success but offers an overnight beginning. An excellent addition to any career-search collection.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get your job search going NOW - A very good book, February 4, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: The Overnight Job Change Strategy (Paperback)
Highly recommended. This book is extremely practical and action-oriented. Sometimes you need to ponder your goals and take a break to reassess your career; this book is NOT for those times. It's for those times when you need to leave a horrible job before you lose your mind, are about to be unemployed, are already unemployed, or for some other reason need *quick* results from your job search. I was faced with imminent slashing of benefits and reduction of salary by half, with mouths other than my own to feed. Asher's book showed me how to rapidly expand my network of contacts, uncover hidden job openings, and move in for the kill on a job I wanted. I got a new job that pays well and suits my skills perfectly--in one month. Thank you Donald Asher!

5.0 out of 5 stars a battle-worn job seeker, February 9, 2004

This review is from: The Overnight Job Change Strategy (Paperback)
Only after spending almost 1.5 years of fruitless job searching am I truly able to appreciate the advice in this book. The #1 lesson: use the telephone! Use it for almost everything, from company research to actually finding the job opening. Finding jobs is like those slide puzzles with tiles -- when one tile moves, a spot becomes available. The goal is to find that vacant spot before it gets filled. The only way to do this is to monitor each person who you are most like in every company you are interested in and find out when that person jumps ship. That's when you need to make your move. This book will teach you how to do this.

I haven't found a job yet, but I'm now inspired with wisdom!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Critical Piece In Any Job Search Portfolio, February 5, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: The Overnight Job Change Strategy (Paperback)
I have to admit to knowing Don personally. But that does not stop me from giving an objective review of an excellent book. I am sorry to hear that the book is out of print. I have hung on to my copy and am referring to it for the third time in my career, reading the section on career transitions, which, although short, is extremely useful. If this book does not become available, look for it used or get it from the library. It is invaluable, as the previous reader stated, if you know what you want to do and want some tools to expand your network. It even offers some ideas if you don't know exactly what you want to do, although he recommends other authors in this case.

If I found a flaw in the book it is that it does not recommend the use of computer tools for networking. I have coupled his information with some of the ideas in "Time Management for Dummies" which advises on use of organizational computer programs, with good results.
