EXCELLENT CROSS SECTION OF A GREAT CONDUCTOR!,

This review is from: Overture the Magic Flute (Audio CD)
This album provides an opportunity to hear Strauss conducting more than his own works. The recordings have been transferred with little or no filtering, resulting in a pronounced background hiss which may be the price we have to pay for the clarity of these recordings cut when electrical recording was only 5 years old. The quality of the performances varies widely, from a Magic Flute overture which sounds like a first run-through to the two Wagner overtures, which are truly great performances. The Berlin Philharmonic has a consistently powerful and well disciplined sound, while the two selections played by the state opera orchestra are only acceptable where the conductor is leading his own music. Well worth the investment for a revelation of 19th Century German classical style other than Weingartner. Strauss shows that it is possible to project great romantic power without going "over the top."

This CD is horrible. The music is good but the sound quality is so bad. Could not be used for anything. Too much noise.
