5.0 out of 5 stars best artists/songwriter of our generation
Sarah Blasko is hands down one of the best artists/songwriter of our generation. Her ability to reach in her soul to stir emotions and create breath taking arrangements is beyond comprehension. To those who have negative things to say about her, might want to research this brilliant woman before judging her music.

Albums like this worry me. Are we going to be subjected to yet another "incredibly talented singer/songwriter"? Well, yes..... sort of.

I have heard this album quite a few times now and I don't mind it at all. It isn't terribly exciting, but Ms Blasko does exhibit some real promise and I am sure that she will have a successful career in pop music ahead of...

5.0 out of 5 stars best artists/songwriter of our generation, November 25, 2007
Sarah Blasko is hands down one of the best artists/songwriter of our generation. Her ability to reach in her soul to stir emotions and create breath taking arrangements is beyond comprehension. To those who have negative things to say about her, might want to research this brilliant woman before judging her music.
First of all, you have to realize that the title The Overture & The Underscore, describes the album completely. There are no over-produced tracks on this cd. Therefore making it stand out among the rest of those artist that relay on heavy choruses and beats. Sarah Blasko incorporated her original recording she had done with her little Casio piano, and built around it. Which for me in humble and deserving of my credit to her as a real artist as compared to those who buys pre-made songs and music.
Second of all, Sarah Blasko seduces her audience with her sultry and elegantly arranged music. Her lyrics speaks on a complex level of intensity, one must almost get into her mind and talent to truly appreciate her.
The first song that caught my attention was Counting Sheep, which for me, is the stand out track of the entire album. When I first heard this song, I was living in Arizona and the song came on and I literally stopped in my tracks, I couldn't move, this voice this music hit a nerve in my body and I was in shock. From there on i ran to Barnes and Nobel and found out that the rest of the album is full of surprises such as Perfect Now, Sweet November, Always Worth It, just to name the few.
If you appreciate true, raw talent that's not sugar coated, Sarah Blasko's, The Overture & The Underscore is a must have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning, January 25, 2005
This review is from: Overture & The Underscore (Audio CD)
This cd was recommened by an Aussie friend of mine and I'm simply blown away by Sarah's music. Her voice is honest and has a character of purity. Combine that with emotion, great lyrics, and introjection of electronic elements....the songs are truly beautiful.

Bonus! THere are guitar chords in the cd-booklet! Way cool!

4.0 out of 5 stars For those "not-so-chipper" days..., April 14, 2005

This was an absolutely beeeeautiful album. I'd heard Sarah Blasko's debut single, "All Coming Back" on Triple J, and i was completely swept away. So i went and got the album about a month later, and i must say i am extremely happy with that purchase :)
There's a really pure and honest quality about Blasko's voice, which adds to the meaning of the songs she sings, she simpers the lyrics and you apply them to your sad, sad life...or even if you're just chillin on a Sunday arvo, it's the type of music that makes you see beauty. It's trippy. Good use of intruments and each song has a really great atmosphere to it. The best part about this album is undoubtedly the vocals, she'll take you through your hardest moments and make you cry, but you'll love it.

Very good emotional and lyrical value, some good songs include:

All Coming Back- "Light up the sky, argue the night, to reveal one thing i did was right. Patterns are laid, fortunes are made, we remark on the way that things remain".

At Your Best- "If only you were at your best, instead of fighting yourself this way".

Perfect Now- "So thats why, i wont wake you where you lay, if i could now, i'd freeze time...i can't find forever in your eyes, i should leave you while they're dry" (This song made me cry)(yeah thats right...CRY)

True Intention- "Dont let me in, i'll shut you out, take control of the wheel and now, lead me onto a sense of my true intention".

She's also great live, doesnt lose a smidgeon of quality.

4.0 out of 5 stars More etheral female singers from the land of OZ ...., January 17, 2005
This review is from: Overture & The Underscore (Audio CD)
Alright let's put a side the face that sarah is enchantingly beautiful..... Sarah could slot into the same niche as beth orton and sarah mclachlan but i think she has a bit more edge to her and i think the production is a bit more lo-fi and less produced, which adds to the fragility of her voice.
And she definitley has australian tinges to her voice, which sets her apart aswell.
Can't wait to see her live over this summer.
For more gorgeuous australian femal voices check...redsunband

4.0 out of 5 stars Overscore, June 26, 2007

This is an excellent debut effort from a voice almost unknown in the states. The album as a whole is lovely from start to finish and there are a number of stand out tracks that branch the divide between guitar driven indie rock and electronic pop. It's certainly worth the price of admission and should be shared with anyone who has an interest in beautifully crafted melodies and lyrics. After listening you'll be eagerly awaiting the stateside release of her sophomore album, What The Sea Wants, The Sea Will Have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Impressive and startingly beautiful debut by the latest Aussie talent, July 9, 2006

I love Sarah Blasko. Unashamedly. I will admit that being an aussie myself I have been more exposed to her music and am sort of biased, but her music shows such a lyrical deepness and ethereal quality it's hard to not be affected. There is something glacial but also very warm about her music, it's comfortable and affects you slowly and softly until it's deep in your head. Not everyone's cup of tea, I have heard a few people say it's too boring or 'sleepy' for their liking, but that's personal opinion and does not reflect on Sarah's obvious talent.

Standout fave songs for me are Perfect Now, At Your Best and True Intentions. There is a definite radiohead-esque quality to her music, an almost classic vintage sound coupled with an airy beautiful voice. It's a bit like that first warm breath disappearing into the cold air as you step outside in the heart of winter.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just what We needed, January 1, 2006
Norah Jones... Meets Fiona Apple... Meets Radiohead.
A combining mixture of sounds that leaves the finished product a
masterpiece. "True Intentions" is a Radiohead-esque ballad that can't help but be loved. This artist is a true gem!

I came across Sarah Blasko at a Ray LaMontagne concert. She was the opening act, and before the show I had not heard a thing about her. I could care less about Sarah Blasko, untill she got on stage. She was the best opening act I have seen EVER, and her was voice was so beautifully haunting I couldn't take my eyes off of her. I was absolutely enthralled, so I picked up the cd after the show (Ray was amazing as well), and I haven't put it down. It's a smart and captivating listen by a suprisingly beautiful singer/songwriter. I would recommend this cd to anyone who is a fan of music.

5.0 out of 5 stars highly recommended, August 16, 2005

On first listen this CD comes across as simple and dark, but after a few minutes of wading through it you realize that there is a lot of great, well thought out, heartfelt music on here. I came across this disk by accident at a record store when I was trying to figure out why none of the CD's I was scanning were playing. I grabbed it off the shelf just to test the system for ANYTHING that would play and found myself happier with this than any of the other albums that I was trying to listen to. Not only are the lyrics and music good, but the faint techno track that comes into the background on many of the songs is simply perfect. I'm sure that I will be listening to this for many months and years to come while I'm working away at my computer.

Ms Blasko's voice is quite good and the musical arrangements on this album are interesting and yet unpretentious. This is probably the sort of album one would enjoy listening to in a big armchair with a glass of merlot after a hard day's work.

I had hoped for a little more orchestral music in this recording, but it is generally a very attractive sounding recording. It beats the heck out of Missy Higgins' over-hyped, over-praised and utterly pretentious first album! Sarah Blasko's voice also lacks the annoying, pretentious and overly mannered vocal habits of Ms Higgins.

I rather like Sarah Blasko's first album and I would have given this recording 3½ stars if it was possible. I am not prepared to give this album any more stars at the moment, however, I can honestly say that this is a very acceptable and pleasant abum. I have heard a lot of garbage and "over-hyped" nonsense of late, Ms Blasko (pleasantly) surprised me and that counts a lot in my books!
