Book Description

January 15, 1998 0806128941 978-0806128948
One of the most influential and popular works in all literature, Ovid’s Metamorphoses is a weaving-together of classical myths, extending in time from the creation of the world to the death of Julius Caesar. This volume provides the Latin text of the first five books of the poem and the most detailed commentary available in English for these books.

In his introduction to the volume, editor William S. Anderson provides essential background information, discussing Ovid’s life, the reception of the Metamorphoses during Ovid’s day and after, and the poem’s central issues. The Latin text of the five books is Anderson’s own edition, based on years of study of the surviving manuscripts. In the extensive notes that follow the text, Anderson offers both useful summaries of the stories and detailed line-by-line comments.

Unlike other epic poems, which concern wars and heroism, the Metamorphoses centers on ordinary human beings, women as well as men, who live in a world of continuous change. The first five books, which include such well-known stories as Apollo and Daphane, Diana and Actaeon, and Narcissus and Echo, deal especially with the relationship between human beings and the gods. Arrogant and lustful, but all-powerful, the gods of Ovid’s universe selfishly pursue their own pleasures, frequently at the expense of their human targets. Yet these gods escape unscathed, while the humans, unjustly, are punished. Helpless to defend themselves, they are changed into animal or nonhuman forms.

A resource for students and scholars of Latin, this volume enhances understanding and enjoyment of Ovid’s changeable poem about our changeable existence.

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Helpful Commentary November 14, 2001
Format:Paperback
This commentary on Ovid's Metamorphoses is directed at Latin students at the advanced undergraduate and early graduate level, but it also has a lot to offer to scholars and other people who are able to read and enjoy Ovid's original Latin. Written by one of the most distinguished experts in the field, the Latin text of the book follows that of Anderson's own Teubner edition (6.ed. 1993). The commentary reflects Anderson's deep familiarity with Ovid's poetry and his high critical acumen. For a more detailed and highly positive review, see, e.g., Stephen Wheeler in American Journal of Philology 120 (1999) 170-73.

5.0 out of 5 stars a few words to the...well, a few words. September 28, 2007
Format:Paperback
I just wanted to let the interested (particularly the beginning or intermediate student of Latin) know that, while this is a fantastic edition of Books 1-5 and probably by far the most in-depth commentary available for them, it is not marked (i.e., no macra). Additionally, the Latin text of the Metamorphoses and the line-by-line commentary are entirely separate, so the frequent flipping back and forth can begin to feel cumbersome at times. These things said, I do recommend Anderson's commentary to anyone who desires a brilliant, scholarly light to be shed upon Ovid's Metamorphoses; just be aware that this commentary cannot, as Pharr's Aeneid can, be used in lieu of serious attention to the language and a liberal amount of elbow grease.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent text and annotation December 11, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Anderson's introduction and commentary provide a thorough contextual grounding for Ovid's Metamorphoses. As other reviewers have pointed out, the notes are aimed at a reader who already has a good grasp of Latin. This is not a quick read for a first-year student! But for those with a sufficient background, this is definitely the best way to enjoy Ovid's mastery of poetic form and substance. Although the vowel length is not marked, it's relatively easy to determine it if one keeps the meter in mind, since the vowel quantity is often essential to the metric scheme. Because my knowledge of the language is at only an intermediate level, I could have profited from a few more notes to explain the difficult verses. However, what Anderson has provided is already more than four times the length of the text, so there is plenty of help for the diligent reader. I'm still only in Book I, but I'm thoroughly enjoying this text!
