Book Description

January 27, 2005
Two young musicians hit the American highway in this first novel about the irresistible pulse of rock 'n' roll.

Owen Noone is a charismatic minor league baseball player who gives it all up to sing punked-out folk songs. The Marauder is a shy college grad with a fledgling case of hero worship. Armed with their songbook of Lomax classics and two freshly minted guitars, they crisscross the country, playing in coffee shops and on sidewalk corners.

When their single finds its way to a college radio station and gets major air time, it seems like their rock 'n' roll dream has finally come true. A major label signs them, they kickstart a national tour, and the bands they once headlined for now headline for them. But Owen and the Marauder soon discover that while becoming famous can be easy, being famous is not. Thrust into the role of rock stars, they struggle to adjust. Things begin to go sour when Owen grows obsessed with derailing the election of his estranged father, who is running for the U.S. Senate on a family values platform. As reporters dig and disasters strike, it quickly becomes clear that Owen Noone and the Marauder might not be able to survive the wealth of their own publicity, a reality neither friend bargained for, and one that very well might be the undoing of their legend.

Review

"We've just received breaking news: guitarist and singer Owen Noone of Owen Noone and the Marauder collapsed while performing tonight in Los Angeles. Nothing about his condition has been made clear to us, and we've received no official comment from anyone connected to Owen or his label. Stay with us - we'll keep you posted with any further developments. Forty uninterrupted minutes of music start right after this commercial break. --This text refers to an alternate Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good, solid entertainment with wry twists to keep it interesting., November 26, 2005

This review is from: Owen Noone and the Marauder: A Novel (Paperback)
Owen Noone and the Marauder is one of the Great American Novels that so many of us want to write. It's straightforward, presents believable characters that the reader cares about, explores themes of home and parents and starting fresh through creation and does this in a sweeping roadtrip, rock and rolling across the country and back. It is a novel of identity, written like a modern-day Gatsby, with the narrator swept up by the enigmatic and charming titular character to become unlikely rockstars (one word intentional), playing simple chords and the words to folk tunes collected by Alan and John Lomax in the 30s: "two kids who wanted to bang on their Telecasters and scream into microphones, to feel blood and adrenaline pumping through every vein, to make people sing along to a nearly dead national song, to make people believe in rock `n' roll. . ." I recommend this novel highly to anyone who enjoys pure fiction that tells the story of all journeys: physical, emotional and relational.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great book for teens and young adults !, September 28, 2005
This review is from: Owen Noone and the Marauder: A Novel (Paperback)
This is a story that pulls you in and keeps you there. The search for who you are and where you are going in life is one that every person must take. The story of these two main characters and the unusual path they take together along with the role of music in this first novel, make it an ideal book to give to your young reader that perhaps has trouble finding books that interest him or is questioning everything at the same time he is championing music that you are sure is not really music; much like parents of every generation have done! A very nice first novel!
