5.0 out of 5 stars A great tale for your explorer!, July 10, 2007

This review is from: Owen's Walk (Hardcover)
As a church librarian, it's difficult to find books to use during story time that express values and Biblical truths but also tell a great story (OK, obviously minus the real stuff in the Bible). It's also difficult to keep a little boy's attention during story time. Owen's Walk has a great tone, you can just see Owen headed home and hear "mimi" guiding him. It's a wonderful adventure, and I believe it will work well being read aloud. The illustrations really bring the story to life, I especially liked the fold out map, the illustrations of the contents of Owen's backpack and the Bible verses matched up with the "signs."
Great book. A great way to express to children how God equips us each step of the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great story teaching a life based on Scripture, September 22, 2007
This review is from: Owen's Walk (Hardcover)
Owen's Walk was written by Karen Hill, author of more than thirty children's books. (She also serves as administrative editor to best-selling author Max Lucado.) Carol Thomspon did a wonderful job as illustrator, filling the pages with color and whimsy.

After a busy morning on his grandma's farm, Owen prepares for a special adventure. Mimi, as Owen calls his grandmother, tucks tucks all sorts of things into a small backpack, including a small book, which she says is "the most important of all." She reads the leather book together with Owen then explains "The pictures in this book will remind you of a Bible verse you've learned. When you are unsure about your journey, pull out this book. The Book of Signs has the answers you'll need."

After a quick goodbye, Owen begins his journey home. At first everything is familiar, but it isn't long before he needs to reference The Book of Signs. Each page helps him find his way. He is reminded not to be afraid because God is always with him. He remembers God will help him and make him strong. The adventure is not easy, but with his verses to help him, and the tools Mimi packed, he makes it safely home.

The back of the book features two pull-out pages which show everything in Owen's pack along with the book of signs and corresponding verse. Inside is a map of his journey and Psalm 37:5 -- "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him."

What I Like: My kids love outdoor adventures! This book is perfect for them. Each time we read it, they want to pack their own adventure bags and head outside. I love that each step of Owen's journey points him (and readers!) back to Scripture. The special features at the back are a big hit with my kids, too. Maps are a big deal with this age group, thanks to Dora the Explorer.

What I Dislike: Nothing. It's a sweet story with a good underlying message.

Overall Rating: Excellent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Graduations, June 17, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Owen's Walk (Hardcover)
My school has used Owen's Walk for a number of years as a graduation gift for students who attended from Kindergarten thru 8th grade. All the teachers sign the books with messages for the graduates. Shortly before graduation, I sit down and read it to the 8th graders. The story covers a boy's first walk home by himself. His grandma provides him with a book of signs that gives him help as he walks the path. He has a backpack full of tools to help him on his way. I tell the students that they have all the tools they need in their own backpacks to make the successful journey in life as they leave our school and start their new adventure. The book of signs, their Bible and memorized scriptures, will help them on their journey. It's a beautiful story that lends itself well to graduates taking new and important steps with reminders of God's provision and care as they make the journey. And of course, Owen is greeted at home by his proud and loving father at the end. Owen's Walk is no longer in print, so it is getting harder to find. But it is definitely worth the effort of searching for copies. Hopefully the publishers will do another printing of this lovely story.
