Editorial Reviews

After collaborating on the 2007 underground classic Only Death Can Kill You, emcee Awol One and Canadian producer Factor are releasing their latest LP, Owl Hours on newly rising label Fake Four Inc. In an unlikely attempt at party music, the instrumentals on Owl Hours move from electronic pop tinged rap to folk hop with a number of live musicians contributing their talents. Guest vocalists on their latest effort include Aesop Rock, Myka 9, Tha Alkaholiks and executive producer Xzibit. Topics on Owl Hours range from curious celebrations, to nostalgic odes to former loves to straight up drunken party anthems all told through the eccentric eyes of Walrus One. Awol and Factor even rocked to packed crowds of teenybopper indie rock fans when they toured with Montreal band Islands in 2008. Through the years Awol continues to gain respect from artists and fans of all genres and never fails to keep his art and music completely real and original. Over his nearly 15 year career Awol One has built a strong grassroots fan base from touring extensively throughout the US, Canada and Europe by himself and as a member of the legendary Shape Shifters crew. He has collaborated on tracks with very high profile hip hop artists such as KRS One, Kool Keith and Atmosphere just to name a few.

This review is from: Owl Hours (Audio CD)
For those who don't know - this is rapper Awol One and beat maker Factor's second collaborative album together but "Owl Hours" is far from a sophomore slump. There are a few noticeable differences here that sets "Owl Hours" apart from their previous work "Only Death Can Kill You": First being the overall change of pace on this album - while "Only Death's" beautiful production sat comfortably in the 80-90 bpm range - Owl Hours picks up the pace and most of these beats sit in the 100 bpm range with a more party friendly vibe. The second major difference here comes with the top notch cast of guest appearances that range from Aesop Rock and Myka 9 to Xzibit and B-Real - all of the guests provide inspiring energy and skill. Another major difference here is that Factor has hired a team of musicians to re-play samples and layer instrumentation like he never has before. Owl Hours is a really a landmark album for both of these musicians and I recommend it to open-minded Hip Hop Heads and Indie Rockers alike.
