I Own the Dawn by M.L. Buchman
Romantic Suspense -Aug. 1st, 2012
4 ˝ stars

I Own the Dawn is part of the Night Stalkers series and I couldn't have had a more enjoyable introduction to a series I will definitely be reading more of!

Kee Smith has worked hard to get where she is as a gunner and sharpshooter. She only wants to be the best and be part of the best. And that means setting her sights on join SOAR. SOAR (Special Operations Aviation Regiment) are the toughest in the sky and as only the second woman to be entered into their ranks she doesn't want to screw it up. But she suddenly finds herself assigned to a helicopter Captained by the only other woman to enter SOAR and Kee must fight to prove herself to the team. But her strong attraction to the navigation officer complicates matters.

Lieutenant Archibald Jeffrey Stevenson II comes from money and influence. Always awkward around woman he can't believe how instantly he is attracted to Kee and finds his normally reserved self flirting with her! But she is under his command and Kee doesn't want part of any real relationship. As they grow to admire each other and work in a terrible war zone they can't help but get closer. But while fighting and the military comes easy to Kee her haunting past prevents from truly making herself vulnerable and open to the love .

M.L. Buchman really knows how to write a book with compelling characters and action. I was caught in the knock out romance from the start. The military aspects felt very real and even tragic as war ravages those in the military as well as the poor civilians. But because the book is part of a series it took me a little while to orient myself to the military information and characters.

What I enjoyed the most was the real affection and attraction between the two main characters. Kee has had a hard life and in this book playing more of the `guy' role. She isn't looking for a relationship just some fun. Kee finds herself not only challenged on the battlefield but in love. I was overjoyed when she opens her heart up to a poor orphan and her strong attraction to Archie.

Archie is a tough soldier but somehow so sweet. He really cares for Kee. I love how patient he is with Kee, waiting for her to work through her inability to trust and let love into her life. This touching romance in addition to the military action and the heart-rending adoption of a poor orphan girl by Kee make this a stand out read. And one that I never wanted to end! I have defiantly found another favorite author and can't wait to read more in the series.

1.0 out of 5 stars Beyond disappointed December 22, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I Kindled the second book in this series based on a review by Eloisa James via NPR, but got stuck on the 1st chapter after reading in complete disbelief Mr. Buchman's description of Sergeant Kee Smith and her preparation to meet her CO - Chest pushed out: "Six pack abs and a good sold rack for a chest; on clear display." I though well maybe I need to read the 1st one in the series to understand the fan fair.

I was beyond disappointed: being a citizen of the world that is portrayed in this book I kept finding errors in Mr. Buchman's depiction; errors that simple research would have fixed. And again being a female in a predominantly male paramilitary environment I have to say I found the behavior of Mr. Buchman's heroines abhorrent.

I attempted to ignore my own knowledge and just enjoy the story; but was perpetually disappointed in the plot lay-out and contrived story line.

2.0 out of 5 stars Review from My Overstuffed Bookshelf September 10, 2012
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I Own The Dawn is the second book in the Night Stalkers series by M.L. Buchman. Even though it is the second book in the series, it can be read as a stand alone novel.

This book wasn't as great as the first book in the series. While the author kept with her usual theme of writing, I found myself disliking the characters. Kee is a character that you have to read more of before you actually start enjoying her character. Archie was more of a passive hero than I am used to. He just didn't fit the bill of an Alpha hero in my mind. They both have some issues that need to addressed before they can improve in personality and relationships.

I will warn the reader of this romance that if you are not familiar with much of the military lingo, you will be wondering about some of it. I am not a big fan of all the military speak -- since I am not around it -- so it did become repetitive and frustrating for a majority of the book.

While this wasn't a favorite book of mine, I will still give the book points for being thorough and written at a good pace. Again, just be aware that this is a military themed romance with it being prominent in the story.
