This review is from: Own It!: The Ups and Downs of Homebuying for Women Who Go It Alone (Paperback)
Own it! is a guide for single women buying their first home. This is the book your best single gal pal who's been-there-done-that would write, if she were a writer. Jennifer Musselman covers not only the basics of mortgages and house-buying like any other first time home buyer how-to guide, but also topics specific to single women -- things like what do you do when your boyfriend/potential boyfriend is unsupportive, how to keep yourself safe, letting go of the white knight dream, etc.
She also goes through the home-finding process itself -- finding a realtor whom you can work with (hint: if he's hitting on you, that's not a good thing), sifting through what you really want in a home, and discovering if you're really emotionally ready to buy a house.
The book is written in a friendly, down-to-earth manner which is easy to read. Most of the book is written in anecdotes of what she and her friends did right and wrong when buying homes, which are fun to read and informative.
The only thing I would really say against it is that it's definitely geared more toward buying a condo than a house. Jennifer tells you more than once to check the building's policies on pets, remodeling, etc., concerns which wouldn't apply to many people. Nor does she cover what you do once you actually own the home -- maintenance, remodeling, etc.
In all, this is definitely a good book to check out if you're a single woman contemplating buying a home. If you want to get into the finer points of mortgages and lending, you might need other resources, but this definitely helps make buying a home on your own look far more reasonable.
