You haven't got Blues collection until you got a Bromberg.,

Like many Bromberg fans of the 70's I have been waiting for these albums to come out on CD. David Bromberg, who has played backup on a coupla dozen albums is one of the genuises of the string instrumnet. His clear picking of Guitar, bass, banjo or ukelele is up there with any master player and his work often surpasses those same masters in unexpected ways. These have to heard to be appreciated. His albums are a great mixture of blues, rock, and bluegrass with a voice that can switch from sad to angry to funny as fast as he can switch chords. But David is at his best live. Where he can even make you tap and stomp and dance to the bluesiest of ballads. "Sharon" and "Keys to the Highway" are just a coupla examples. This is an album to work to or enjoy in a long trip when you need to belt out a tune with some heart. Enjoy this album I swear you won't be disappointed.

I had been waiting for the all acoustic "My own house" to come out on CD for years. What a bonus to get David's live album attached to it. This takes me back to the Rainbow Music Hall in Denver in the late 70's. This man can play-Everything he touches- with such passion and mastery it is a shame that he no longer tours. Highlights include "Don't let your Deal go down", and "Yankee's Revenge" for some great picking, the touching instrumental "Sheebeg and Sheemore", along with "Spanish Johnny" perhaps the best song on the album, and a great Live rendition of "As years go passing by". Thanks David for putting on one of the best shows I had the privilege to be a part of over the past thirty years. This CD is a great way to remember those days.

Vintage Bromberg,

I saw David Bromberg in concert many times in the 70's at Devon PA. He had a great mix of blues and rock that I enjoyed immensely. This CD is wonderful and I've been playing it over and over since I bought it. It's truly vintage Bromberg and I feel like I'm sitting there in the concert in the round at Devon again when it plays. "Sharon" is my favorite. Terrific CD. You won't be disappointed.

I have vague memories of listening to Dave Bromberg in the 70's and owned a few albums on vinyl. I was wishing I could find them, but then the CDs have been released. After living away from the southeast PA & Delaware region, he moved back to Delaware recently and has begun touring more. I had the great pleasure of seeing him with the "big band" in Philly at the Kimmel Center, which is an excellent new concert hall.
His eclectic style and proficiency on many different stringed instruments is one of the reasons his music, and this disc, is so wonderful. I prefer many musical genres, and listen to everything from classical, opera, to gospel, blues, and folk. The songs on this CD are a great mix of blues, rock, bluegrass, and folk. Everything thing to like, something for everybody. If you ever have the chance to hear him live, you owe it to yourself to go to a performance.

I own this CD and highly recommend it. If you want to hear what David Bromberg is capable of this is the one to get. I owned My Own House when it came out separately on vinyl and it is an awesome showcase of his ability on acoustic guitar. You have to enjoy the different styles of music he likes, because he throws in some bluegrass and fiddle tunes at the start. He leaves that behind and gets right to the delta blues covers. It's worth the price just to hear his slide version of Georgia on My Mind. Other favorites include Spanish Johnny, and Shebeg An Shemore, a traditional Scottish tune. The blues tunes are fantastic, just him and his acoustic. This guy is a fingerstyle master. My jaw dropped when I first heard Cocaine Blues. Then as a bonus the last six songs are from a set with his stage band, two albums in one! This is a set with electric guitar, which includes the humorous, Sharon, (aka, Oh Sharon). I just watched a clip of this on YouTube. Check it out. This compilation of two albums on one CD gives us David Bromberg and his wide-ranging love of American roots music.

Bromberg toured to Australia in the late 70s with his full band and it was a delight to see him live - a fantastic show brimming with talent, joy and superb musicianship. This cd is like that - it overflows with genius. Buy it for 'As The Years Go Passing By' alone. Beautiful. I play the latter half more (the 'You Should See The Rest Of The Band' tracks) but that's just a personal preference. It's all good.

Wow, Might Be Brom's Best Ever,

When I was an undergrad I saw Dave Bromberg perform solo at my campus's beer-only venue and he was terrific. I have been hooked ever since. I own about ten of Dave's albums, and listen to them a lot. I can say then, with some authority that (IMHO) this is his best album, by far!
The first even dozen songs (originally released as My Own House, 1978) are Dave either solo acoustic, or accompanied by George Kindler and/or Dick Fegy on mandolin, fiddle or banjo. The songs are wonderful, quiet, lovely, and an assortment of traditional old folk and blues. He gives his own particular twist to such classics as Cocaine Blues, Spanish Johnny, and Georgia on My Mind. The next six songs (released as You Should See the Rest of the Band, 1980) are all live versions, and a bit more raucous with Dave sometimes playing on electric guitar, and accompanied by the rest of the band. Between the two albums you get a taste of Mr. Bromberg as solo artist and as part of a group. If you know Dave's work then you already will understand that this is a great album, and if you don't this is probably the best place to start as you get him both ways. |
