|
In this new, fully updated and expanded edition, James M. Giffin, M.D. and Tom Gore, D.V.M. have incorporated the latest information on veterinary horse care and disease prevention in both words and pictures. Two new chapters, Pediatrics and Geriatrics, have been added in recognition of the importance of these specialty areas. Owners will welcome their straightforward, easy-to-understand approach to a host of topics of interest and concern.
Sudden illness or injury can be life-threatening. An Index of Signs and Symptoms on the inside front cover provides a rapid means to access information and make an informed decision whether to treat an emergency or seek veterinary assistance.
The well-cared-for horse at all stages of life, when given annual vaccinations, scheduled deworming, good dental and foot care, suffers fewer illnesses and infirmities, costs less to maintain, and will repay the small expenses many times over in the pride and pleasure of ownership. Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook, Second Edition, gives all horsemen, including the 100,000 owners of the first edition, the means to achieve this goal.

Detailed information,
By horseperson (Guatemala) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook (Howell Reference Books) (Hardcover)
I find this to be the most detailed veterinary guide, short of buying a veterinary encyclopedia. Of the several I own, most are very general and have a lot of "ask you veterinarian for a course of action." This one tells you the most common treatments so you know what to expect. I go back to my dog-eared copy all the time. As I back-yard breeder, I like Giffin's veterinary breeder's guide, too.

A Serious Equine Health Care Reference,
By A Customer
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Horse Owner's Veterinary Handbook (Howell Reference Books) (Hardcover)
As a first-horse owner, this text was a whole lot more than I needed or wanted to know. For the horse owner who is serious about learning as much as possible about health care problems and how to treat these problems themselves, the book is a winner and probably unique. However, for someone who likes to rely on his/her vet for anything more than the usual maintenance procedures (deworming, treating minor cuts, etc.) and doesn't foresee giving his/her horse injections and the like or treating fairly serious illnesses, a less complete book would be sufficient and much less daunting. Probably an excellent reference for students of equine health and for those who would like to become vets themselves one day.
