This was actually a good book. Sometimes i don't like taking a chance on a book with no reviews from an author I don't know. 2.0 out of 5 stars Good Storyline Ruined by Terrible Writing, Editing
The storyline was okay, the characters sympathetic (although the names are stupid), the sex scenes well-done.

However, the writing was inexpert and the editing was completely absent. The whole thing reads like a first draft. Anders writes entirely too much in the passive voice so that things happen, but by hands or chins or thoughts and not by people...

This was actually a good book. Sometimes i don't like taking a chance on a book with no reviews from an author I don't know. The story draws you in immediately from the beginning and flowed right through no extra unnecessary words or chapters sometimes authors do that to full a book example I detest when the main characters don't meet until the seventh chapter things like that . Arabella and Darth's chemistry was good. Arabella was won in a game of cards by her stepfather and given to Darth, Darth is a good guy even though he has his own demons to fight. This is a quick read and has some erotic sex not hardcore but still good. So if you like the captive, do what I say even though I have feelings for you with a touch of erotic sex then this is for you.

The storyline was okay, the characters sympathetic (although the names are stupid), the sex scenes well-done.

However, the writing was inexpert and the editing was completely absent. The whole thing reads like a first draft. Anders writes entirely too much in the passive voice so that things happen, but by hands or chins or thoughts and not by people. Really, it's embarrassing that this text has been published!

Here's some examples of what I'm talking about. Twice the word "sordid" was written as "sorted." At one point, Arabella "shuttered" when she should have "shuddered." Victor waves a "treacherous knife" and Darth takes a "languished puff" off a cigar. Cliches are attempted repeatedly and yet repeatedly gotten wrong. It's almost as if the writer's native language is not English and she tries to compensate by depending too heavily on a thesaurus.

When I pick up a romance novel, I want to be transported away--to enter a dream. The terrible quality of the writing and editing here jerked me out of the dream repeatedly. What's the point of a book so bad you just laugh at it, the author, and the publisher? And based on the blurbs in the back advertising other books by Anders or the publisher, the quality of this book is no worse than any of the others! Therefore, I cannot recommend this book, the author, Shirl Anders, or the publisher, Allure Books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story!, February 12, 2011
This review is from: Owning Arabella (Kindle Edition)
I ended up really enjoying this book and have read it four times since! I agree the editing could have been better and I would have personally liked it to be longer. However the story itself is well written. The sex scenes are tasteful and don't go too overboard. Provides just enough of the bondage/captive type scenario to enthrall but not enough to insult. If you've ever read Pride and Prejudice or Jane Eyre and wished things would get a little more heated then you'll love this book!

Darth wins Arabella in a card game. Takes her home, takes care of her, gives her some good loving in the process, saves her brother, gets rid of the evil step father. Basically saves her world..What more can a girl ask for? Pick it up, you won't be disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Insipid Silliness, March 6, 2011

Pray tell, this author would have us believe a gently born young lady would find herself in the clutches of a craven step-father who gambles her off as a slave in Merry Old England. Not just a pawn is she, but the slave to a hideously disfigured, raving sex fiend Gentleman Lord! Despite his wild and selfish sexually predatory behaviors, our young Innocent finds him to be the love of her life. What a match, they may deserve each other, no reader desrves such insipid silliness.
