Book Description

Owning Treasure is the story of Antonio Pagano, a man who lives amidst the unrelenting suspicion of a petty theft he insists he did not commit, but which nevertheless defines his life. On the day of the crime a disaster of epic proportion occurred in Northeastern Pennsylvania as the Susquehanna River plunged through the ceiling of the Knox Coal Mine, leading to the collapse of the region’s only major industry. Young Antonio flees his hometown before he learns of the disaster. While away he builds a new life for himself and gains a family in the process. When once again the river upends the lives of those living along its banks, it also calls Antonio back home to his people, only now as a respected and generous business owner. In serving his community, he seeks to restore the broken relationships of his past but finds only awkwardness and absurd conflict because he refuses to confess to the crime which drove him away.

Like the flow of water, the events surrounding the generations of Antonio’s family are at once under their control and in control of them. The course of Antonio's life may have been altered by a crime, but Antonio alone must navigate through the consequences of that event. Ultimately, he will be responsible for what he becomes. In the days following Antonio's death, his true legacy is revealed as his wife, his son, and his very clever grandchildren Tony and Olivia discover long forgotten secrets of what happened fifty years earlier on the day of the mine disaster. They will come to understand the difference between possessing treasure and owning it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Indeed a pleasure October 6, 2012
Format:Paperback
Could something that happened many years ago cause you to hold a grudge that lasts a lifetime? Holding a grudge and feeling the ramifications is the main theme of OWNING TREASURE as well as the that of family, traditions, and ethics. Antonio's father wouldn't forgive him for something he thought his son had done, and he harbored this belief his entire life until his death.

OWNING TREASURE was a poignant book about facing the death of a parent and looking back on the life they lived as well as how the life we lead today was affected by family principles. It also brought to light how our "growing up years" affected our present lives and relationships with spouses, friends, and children.

OWNING TREASURE moved from 1959 to 2009 and covered the Pagano family for three generations. It told of the loss, the love, the heartbreaks and the good times the family shared. It contained historical events as well as being a tale of family history, nostalgia, and of immigrants who worked hard in America and passed this trait on to their children. The third generation of Paganos lived in the technology world, but they kept family customs. It gives insight into how children view the death of grandparents and how children are always interested in the past of their parents and grandparents. I remember asking about the life my grandfather led when he was an immigrant from Italy. I always believe we NEVER lose the traditions and ethics that were instilled in us even as the generations pass.

The characters were exceptionally well described, and you could easily visualize their clothing and their mannerisms as well as their feelings. You will feel every emotion each character was experiencing and feel their pain and their joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable, heartwarming story August 20, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a voracious reader and over time I've come across a number of debut novels which fell short of the mark. This novel exceeded my expectations! Joe and Laura have managed to create realistic and deep characters that draw the reader into a well conceived plot. The written dialog rings true and the authors are able to maintain a consistent thematic voice over the generations spanned by the book. The scenes that take place post-funeral are especially poignant, touching, and a little surprising as well. Thank you, Wilburs ...

5.0 out of 5 stars Captivating Until the End August 5, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I really enjoyed how Owning Treasure went back and forth between the generations. The story itself is wonderfully laid out and so well written that it will draw you in and keep you reading to the end. The characters are all so real that you can easily see them as people you would know or meet. While the mystery part of the story is there with the crime then real is story is about family. A sequel, "Antonio's Letters," is already in the works. Although the release date is not set, the first chapter can be read on Joe and Laura's Website.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it! May 2, 2012

Owning Treasure gives the reader an insight into a family through generations, taking place in an area of Pennsylvania that I knew well. I saw places in this book through the description of the author that were totally clear to me and so much I related to. I was absorbed by this book as it gripped my imagination and my heart in so many ways. In truth I could not put this book down - stayed up late for a few nights and even caught myself nodding off, but forcing myself to finish this story of the generations in this tale of mystery that gripped this family for so many years. It was a book that conveyed so many values and the people that held on to those values, integrity, character, courage and strength. The authors' writing flowed so well, going back and forth through different eras did not deter me from completely inhaling this book! I will definitely be following these authors' for future books.
