For a long time, I was feeding my chins cheaper "mixed" brands of food that had other components in them. Things that, as it turned out, were more "treat" and less nutrition. Because they liked the mixes, specifically the "treat-like food stuffs" they didn't eat the pellets and they pretty much tuned out on hay as well. Let's face it, junk food can be yummy and we all fall victim to its temptations from time to time. The problems that created cost me thousands of dollars in vet bills and the near death of two of my chins. You see, chins need Timothy hay. It HAS TO BE the main source of their diet and then you supplement that with hay-based pellets. It's the chewing and grinding of hay fronds that keeps their teeth in good shape and the hay based pellets keeps their digestive system in balance. Chins may be long lived but they're really quite fragile little guys and diet, dust baths and environment are key to keeping them healthy and happy. It took me some time to wean my chins off of the mixed food and I did it by mixing the food they wanted with the Oxbow they needed. Gradually, I increased the ratio of Oxbow to "treat food" until they were off of it altogether. I did this in conjunction with using a variety of Oxbow Hays which I mixed in with the Oxbow Timothy to give them some variety and encourage them to eat more hay. So, after two chins having teeth surgery and one in the hospital for 4-5 days on IVs ( I went to the vets everyday and sat with her for 2-3 hours just holding her in my arms) while they tried to clean out her digestive tract because she had a lump of rock hard food just sitting like a ball in her stomach; I learned my lesson.Read more ›

My chinchilla used to be very underweight. We were feeding him timothy hay and Carefresh pellets (which he rarely ever touched; this was probably why he was so thin), but then I realized that I needed to switch because the other brand was unhealthy. So after getting expert advice, we switched to Oxbow! Best decision ever! My chinchilla loves loves loves this brand! Plus there are no unsafe or unhealthy additives like many commercial brands will have--- no fruits or nuts or seeds, just good ol' pellets. I have never tasted these (ha!), but Snickerdoodle will sometimes take this out of my hand, and that's certainly saying something! Great price, great product, happy chinchilla and chinchilla momma. 100 stars!!!

My chinchilla loved this food. It smelled like grass and didn't have all the colorful, "gimmicky" fillers. It's a pretty solid and healthy pet product.

I purchased this at either Petco or PetSmart (don't remember). My Chinchillas absolutely would not eat it for some reason. They literally would not eat for days rather than eat this. That is not to say it is bad, it's just that our Chinchillas really, really don't like it.

We then purchased Sunscription's Vita Prima Chinchilla Formula which they seem to like. I think we need to go back to the food the breeder sold to us, although the Sunscription seems to agree with them. They sure love playing with their food (they wouldn't even play with Oxbow food) and dumping it over the bottom of the cage below the feeder. :-)

This food is pretty basic, good nutrition, no bad additives as far as i can tell. no fillers or treat things in it so its good to buy some hay or fruit too.

Based on my browsing on forums, Oxbow seems to be the brand that provides healthier chinchilla food than most of the alternative. They check out as a good choice in several ways:
- Unlike many other Chinchilla food brands, Oxbow specializes in small and exotic pet food and supplies (a sign that it's their primary business and they'll pay the most attention to quality and safety)
- The food does not contain colorful, sugary bits like some of the other chinchilla foods that are out there
- Their fur looks shinier and healthier

After trying a few of the different brands (initially stuff you'd find in pet stores, Matsuri, etc.) I've decided on this brand, and intent to keep purchasing food from here in the future.

The best chinchilla food available! Definitely recommend to anyone with chinchillas - they love it and it doesn't have stuff in it that they dig at.
