1.0 out of 5 stars Bunny won't eat these "improved" tablets
When these were sold in 500 ct. quantities (for a much lower price per tablet) my rabbit LOVED them. For four years he ate 2-3/day as a treat. I don't know what Oxbow did when they reformulated these supplements because now, he won't even touch them! I can't even hide them in his food. He'll clean his bowl and leave the papaya tablets at the bottom of the dish. Oxbow,...

Rabbit tummy's produce a mucus like substance naturally. In a healthy gut, this just passes through and mixes with the food.

When there is too much fur in the tummy, the mucus binds the fur together and causes a furball.

The enzymes in Papaya (Papain) and pineapple (bromelain) help to break down the mucus. This means the hairball starts to fall apart and the individual strands of hair can pass again. Papain will also sooth the stomach and aid digestion. Bromelain is an anti-inflammatory and also aids digestion.

There is a myth that the enzymes break down and dissolve the hair. It doesn't. But by breaking down the mucus it releases the hair to help it slide through.

Also, fluid is vital for rabbit guts. Again, it helps to dilute the mucus and flush things through. Molting bunnies need to be drinking lots and bunnies with GI troubles DEF need extra fluids to help them out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bunny Digestion Aid, July 7, 2010

This was recommended by our Vet (great, compassionate, A-Z Veterinarian, Midland Texas) and works wonderfully for our full bred male Dutch Bunny. He likes it very much and we cut it into quarters for his bedtime treat every night. He weighs 1.7 lbs and is a year old. We are much more assured this helps him digest fur. Now our other bunny, a female Dutch mix, weighing 2.3 lbs and also the same age, can't stand it. As an alternative we give her dried papaya pieces with no added sugar each night, as her treat, and she loves them. The male won't touch the real fruit pieces. Even though the dried real fruit is probably not as good as the supplement, she is receiving some help to aid breakdown of fur. Both bunnies are regular and seem to be doing well on a strict diet of oxbow bunny basics T-no alfalfa- and fresh Timothy hay, and plenty of oool water.

I don't know if they work or not but my bunnies get SOOOOO excited when I shake the bottle! They really love them. I am not quite finished with the first bottle yet but I intend to buy more. Even if they don't work at least they are great for treats. :-)

When the papaya tablets for HUMANS cost about a fraction of this price? Oh well, my rabbits go nuts for this - they'll start begging and running around as soon as I shake the bottle - so I will probably keep buying it as a daily treat for them.

I just feed these tablets during winter and my guinea pigs just love them. It's a pity you can't get them in my country.

Oxbow Papaya Fruit Plus Digestive Enzyme Supplement For Small Animals

Ordered due to cheaper price online. 4.99 per bottle but ridiculous shipping price of 2.50 per bottle.
Still at 7.50 a piece it was cheaper than what I was paying at the Vet at 10.00 a bottle.
