Book Description

0195125630 978-0195125634 October 1, 2005
For over two centuries, black poets have created verse that captures the sorrows, joys, and triumphs of the African-American experience. Reflecting their variety of visions and styles, The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry aims to offer nothing less than a definitive literary portrait of a people.
Here are poems by writers as different as Paul Laurence Dunbar and W.E.B. Du Bois; Countee Cullen and Langston Hughes; Gwendolyn Brooks and Amiri Baraka; Rita Dove and Harryette Mullen; Yusef Komunyakaa and Nathaniel Mackey. Acclaimed as a biographer and editor, Arnold Rampersad groups these poems as meditations on key issues in black culture, including the idea of Africa; the South; slavery; protest and resistance; the black man, woman, and child; sexuality and love; music and religion; spirituality; death and transcendence.
With their often starkly contrasting visions and styles, these poets illuminate some of the more controversial and intimate aspects of the black American experience. Poetry here is not only or mainly a vehicle of protest but also an exploration of the complex and tender subtleties of black culture. One section offers tributes to celebrated leaders such as Sojourner Truth and Malcolm X, but many more reflect the heroism compelled by everyday black life. The variety of poetic forms and language captures the brilliant essence of English as mastered by black Americans dedicated to the art of poetry.
Loving and yet also honest and unsparing, The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry is for readers who treasure both poetry and the genius of black America.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

If daring and argument forge identity, Stanford professor Rampersad (Life of Langston Hughes) has succeeded in "allowing black poets to create with their own words a portrait of the African-American people." Neither consonant nor cautious, the diversity of the anthology's subject matter is trumped only by its poetic range: Amiri Baraka's and Sonia Sanchez's experimentation vibrate against the classic lyrics of Langston Hughes and Gwendolyn Brooks, mixing visions and trading trials. The anthology, arranged by theme rather than author or time period, simultaneously grounds and sets the reader adrift in a terrain stretching from the American South to Africa, from the contemporary back to slavery. And yet, as Eugene B. Redmond counsels in "Highflown: Love," these poems speak of "A power that cannot be seen / Heard / Or flattened to fit the pages of a book" and ask questions that define a people: Joseph Seamon Cotter asks, in a poem by the same title, "Is It Because I Am Black?" only to be answered pages later by Fenton Johnson in "Tired," "It is better to die than to grow up and find that you are colored." And yet, it is this discovery that elicits other poems' celebrations. The power of this anthology is its capacity for holding out both visions to its readers.

From Booklist

Predicated on the fact that there is a vast body of poetry written by gifted black poets, this far-ranging anthology tells the story of African American culture and explicates its crucial role within the larger literary tradition. Thoughtfully organized, it embraces such resonant historical topics as Africa, slavery, and protest, as well as the more intimate subjects of family, sexuality, and personal faith. Elizabeth Alexander's "Today's News" perceptively conveys the sense of exploration felt by those seeking a voice in American society: "because we know better than anyone / that we are not one or ten or ten thousand things / Not one poem." Of course, such world-renowned poets as Langston Hughes, Rita Dove, and Maya Angelou are included, but also featured are engaging works by Alvin Aubert, Harryette Mullen, and Patricia Smith. Rampersad and Herbold's anthology creates a tide of powerful, melancholy, and ecstatic voices. There is much to admire about the artistry of the poems, and even more to discover about the African American experience. Janet St. John

5.0 out of 5 stars The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry, September 20, 2010

This review is from: The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry (Hardcover)
The editors of this volume have done an exceptional job of collecting and arranging a wide variety of selections by a wide variety of African American writers. Many of the poems are some of my old favorites, and many were new to me. With even a casual glance through the book, the reader cannot miss the pain flowing through African American history, the courage of "ordinary" African Americans, and the genius of African American poets. The helpful biography section in the last pages of the book showcases the range of writers who contributed and continue to contribute to the field of African American poetry. I have waited for a volume of this sort for a long time, and I am glad to have it in hand.

My students loved this book. They found it interesting and it opened their eyes. They have loved the poetry of Tupac, Maya Angelou, but this book broadened their perspectives.

This review is from: The Oxford Anthology of African-American Poetry (Hardcover)
The book was delivered in a very timely manner, especially seeing as how I ordered it on Friday and it was at my house by Tuesday a.m. The seller also included a personalized letter to me thanking me for my business and extending their customer service. The book was in great condition with minor exceptions of used stickers from past owners, but overall I couldn't be happier and would definitely purchase from this seller again.
