4.0 out of 5 stars Who Give A Frak About An Oxford Comma?, July 21, 2008
This review is from: Oxford Comma (MP3 Download)
No stranger to thinking outside the box, Vampire Weekend asks the question that every good English major such as myself should ask. And along the way, their trademark "Nerd Rock" is taken up a few notches. An English major will truly get the song, because they'll actually know what an Oxford Comma is, and how ridiculous it and our entire grammar system tends to be.

The lyrics are very witty, although a little vile at times. This is truly an indie rock tune, and a smart one at that. And in case you were wondering...

"The serial comma (also known as the Oxford comma or Harvard comma) is the comma used immediately before a grammatical conjunction (nearly always and or or; sometimes nor) that precedes the last item in a list of three or more items. The phrase "Portugal, Spain, and France", for example, is written with the serial comma, while "Portugal, Spain and France", identical in meaning, is written without it.

There is no consensus among writers or editors on the use of the serial comma. It is closer to being standard use in American English than it is in British English. In many languages (e.g. French, Italian, Polish, Spanish) the serial comma is not normally used, although it may be employed in cases where it aids clarity or the prosody to be used when reading."

Maybe the F-Word was warranted here. Because, who gives a frak about an Oxford (or Serial) Comma?
