Book Description

This is a major new edition of the acclaimed Oxford-Duden German Dictionary, the result of a unique collaboration between two of the world's foremost dictionary publishers - Oxford University Press and the Dudenverlag. It has been completely updated to include the very latest vocabulary, with over 3,000 new words in each language, including blogger, destination wedding, and oxygen bar.

Language is now studied in the context of its culture, so this new edition now includes cultural notes, providing interesting and helpful information on life in the German-speaking world. In addition, there are boxed notes offering help with language usage and construction, and a revised and updated centre section on correspondence. This includes sample letters, CVs, and emails, and new sections on text messaging and using the telephone, and has been reorganized to make the information more accessible.

The design has been transformed by the use of colour and a new ultra-clear layout, making this dictionary easier than ever to use. It is an essential reference tool for all serious students of German at university level and beyond, and for those who need an authoritative and comprehensive guide to German.

Review

"I have been a loyal user of Oxford dictionaries since my school days. In my current position as press attach at the German Embassy, I use the Oxford-Duden German Dictionary every morning to decipher the artfully crafted and pointed headlines of the British newspapers for the press review which I prepare every morning for the Auswrtiges Amt (Foreign Office) in Berlin."--Michael Fluegger, Press Attach, German Embassy, London

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Speakers of Both Languages, November 22, 2006
This review is from: Oxford-Duden German Dictionary: German-English / English-German (Hardcover)
This dictionary is perfect whether learning English or German. The Pages are three-column, allowing for an incredibly large amount of entries. The Headwords being blue will be likeable depending on the person. I personally don't care much, except that usually colored type fades away more quickly than black. This big bad book is almost four inches thick, so it is definitely a desk or shelf item. That being said, the book's bulk makes it a bad idea to shelf it vertically, as the weight of the pages will pull at the upper binding. It is best for this one to lay flat to avoid premature binding separation. This is the most comprehensive German English Dictionary I have seen, definitely worth the price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oxford Duden German Dictionary/Third Edition, January 11, 2007
By
This review is from: Oxford-Duden German Dictionary: German-English / English-German (Hardcover)
I was looking for a recently edited German dictionary that contained the changes since the "Rechtschreibreform". This was one of the few available. In the past I have used the Langenscheidt, Cassells, AMSCO. This is my first Oxford Duden and I am very pleased with it. The print, with the word being defined in blue, makes it attractive and easy to use. It also contains modern, new words now in usage. The only disadvantage is the phonetic pronunciation for the German is missing, it is there for the English words. The dictionary not only has the new spelling of words, it also contains the old spelling.

5.0 out of 5 stars The mother of all German dictionaries, September 29, 2006
This review is from: Oxford-Duden German Dictionary: German-English / English-German (Hardcover)
If there is a word in the German language, this venerable tome has it. It is a constant reference and I find the section on business correspondence especially helpful when I am looking for the corrent way to phrase a request/order just so. My edition, published in 2001, does not have the section on internet-lingo, but that just adds to it's versatility.

If you are taking German at the intermediate/advanced college level, buy this dictionary. Use it as a doorstop when not actively perusing...it's certainly heavy enough! :-)
