The only "sophisticated" English-Greek dictionary out there,
By A Customer
This review is from: Oxford English-Greek Learner's Dictionary (Hardcover)
Stavropoulos' English-Greek dictionary undoubtedly stands out among the crowd. While most other English-Greek dictionaries are little more than bilingual word lists (table=trapezi), this dictionary strives to answer the real questions that one is asking when looking up a word in a dictionary: "what does it mean, how is it used, what compound expressions is it part of, and how are these translated?"It is the only English-Greek dictionary I have seen which follows this "intelligent" approach. As such, I would highly recommend it (and its Greek-English companion volume) to anyone looking for a good dictionary.

The best English-Greek dictionary of this size,
By Nik "cavanaugh84" (Athens Greece) - See all my reviews

This dictionary is now a standard one volume easy to use English-Greek (modern Greek) dictionary. Although it is not large in size [882pg. and 12cm(wide)*19cm(tall)] it is updated, easy to use and at a very reasonable price.

Excellent dictionary - Too small in size!,

Stavropoulos' dictionaries are the best available for modern demotic Greek, and the product of a truly intimate knowledge of both Greek and English. It is a great shame, therefore, that Oxford University Press, presumably for financial reasons, has produced the English-Greek volume in a significantly smaller size than its Greek-English companion, which is far more comfortable to use. The result is that the English-Greek edition, hard-bound and at about 900 pages thick, is bulky and awkward to handle, and simply does not stand on the bookshelf as a companion to the Greek-English edition. I sincerely hope, however, that OUP does not seek to rectify the situation by making the Greek-English as uncomfortably small in size as its English-Greek companion.

This is a beautiful dictionary but it is not for people who speak and read English and want to learn Greek. There are no English pronunciations for the Greek words...It is simply a Greek Dictionary with the definitions in English...I found the title of this book to be misleading.

The service was great but I feel so stupid because the title was misleading; it was not the book I need. I need to be able to go from English to Greek.

What a pleasure to have this book. If you follow the directions for using this book I don't think there is a phrase you couldn't translate. Just don't use the Vernacular.

It is an excellent dictionary for the Greeks who are trying to learn or study English. I strongly recommend it to everyone who wants a descent and not very expensive dictionary.

This is a great dictionary but only for people that can read Greek. I bought this dictionary for a friend of mine and noticed that all the words were phonetically written in Greek. Not a problem for me since I am Greek, but this was of no use for him since he is just starting to learn on his own

review from Athens, Greece,

The book I ordered was perfect. Unfortunately, the post office I was supposed to pick it up was burned down with Molotov cocktails by anarchists, during the recent Athens unrest. Thankfully, the Amazon wrapper was thick and hence the book got away only with some smoked pages, but that's OK. Amazon is the IN place to purchase books. Thanks
