Book Description

June 21, 1996
Christopher Townsend, Development Officer of Bartlemas College, was reportedly drunk when he plunged from the top of the Tower of Grace. His tragic death does, however, lead to an offer of work for novelist Kate Ivory - finishing Townsend's preparations for the 'Gender and Genre' study fortnight. Kate is doing Bartlemas a favour by taking his place - so why do her new colleagues seem so hostile towards her? And who left the note on one of Christopher's files which reads CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT? When Kate receives some threatening messages of her own, she begins to wonder if Christopher's death was an accident after all. Perhaps he had stumbled on to something he shouldn't have. And perhaps, by stepping into his shoes, Kate has now put her own life in terrible danger...

4.0 out of 5 stars Undemanding whodunnit, July 30, 2005
This review is from: Oxford Fall (Hardcover)
This is a well-constructed undemanding story about Kate Ivory, a writer of historical romances living in Oxford (England), who finds herself involved again in some dark deeds. The story has no violence or sex except by inference, but some sharp characterisation of the rather odd people that live and work in the famous university. There are also some erudite references which, if you pick them up, will give you a glow of pleasure at your own cleverness, but if you don't will not cause a ripple in the smooth passage of the story. I'm going to find some more of her books. Definitely good for a short air trip, or on the beach.

3.0 out of 5 stars An interesting series, July 28, 2006
This review is from: Oxford Fall (Hardcover)
I am thoroughly enjoying this series. I identify with Kate, a mildy successful writer with a humdrum life except for the mysteries she gets herself mixed up in at Oxford. This one was particularly interesting because of the "after-life" narrative that began every chapter. A nice relaxing read, especially just before falling asleep.
