Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Full-color photographs, illustrations and manageable chunks of information presented in large print make the Oxford First Book of Dinosaurs by Barbara Taylor a solid choice for aspiring paleontologists. Insets encourage children to "look closer" (e.g., a cutaway view of a bird-hipped vs. lizard-hipped dinosaur), while activities foster understanding. The volume closes with a "Dinosaur Detective Quiz," glossary, index and pronunciation guide.

From School Library Journal

Kindergarten-Grade 3-This slim, oversized, highly pictorial work will certainly attract readers with its eye-catching cover, colorful illustrations, and abbreviated text in large type. Divided into two-page chapters ("Defense," "Meat-eaters," "Dromaeosaurs," etc.), the book is approachable, and the simple text provides enough basic information to satisfy neophyte dinophiles. Less detailed than but similar in appearance to Michael Benton's Dinosaurs (Kingfisher, 1998) and geared to a younger audience than David Lambert's dramatic DK Guide to Dinosaurs (DK, 2000) or Paul Willis's Dinosaurs (Reader's Digest, 1999), it will serve to freshen up the 567.9s and briefly cheer up youngsters who have read and reread all the other dino books on this level.
