Product Description

Size: 28-Inch

The very large 28" planter uses the same classic design as our other very popular English Planters. The larger scale of this planter complements our Essex collection of large scale benches and chairs. The entire Essex line of benches and chairs have been designed to present a grand scale. Unlike any of our other styles, the Essex line is built of large 2 and 1/8" dimensional lumber. The increased scale has also been employed in the overall dimensions of the planter. Like all of our furniture, this chair is made of shorea, a teak family wood that is more dense and heavy than teak. Shorea requires no finishing and will not rot when left outdoors where rain and sun will damage other lesser quality woods. Left untreated, shorea will weather to a soft warm shade of gray similar to the weathering of teak. Sturdy mortise and tenon construction provides the highest quality joinery that will last for many years. Original color can be maintained by applying a seasonal coat of teak oil.

4.0 out of 5 stars Looks OK, for the money, August 25, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Let's be clear - "Shorea" wood is NOT teak. It is a soft wood, and while it is comparable in weight to teak, you can gouge it with your fingernail. The product arrived covered in powdery sawdust. Do not open the shipping carton indoors. And the engineering of this planter is substandard. It wobbles on a flat surface because the legs are uneven. The pegs are not nearly as strong as teak, and the pre-drilled peg holes do not line up very well, so you can expect the pegs to break off when you try to assemble the planter. Some of the pegs would not go all the way in, and I needed a hacksaw and a chisel to cut them off.

But the good news is that it was cheap compared to the "real thing" teak planters, and if it lasts a few seasons I will have gotten my money's worth. My last teak planter lasted 15 years. When it's time to replace this "shorea" planter, I will go back to genuine teak instead. I understand that you get what you pay for, and that this is a cheap product. I did not expect to receive a quality teak planter at this price. I give it 4 stars because it looks OK from a distance in the garden. I would have given it 5 stars if the pegs and holes had been aligned. But if I had paid teak prices for this, I would be sending it back right now.
