Oxford Garden Design's market umbrella combines sophisticated design and superior manufacturing to please you and your guests for years to come. The polyester umbrella, 9 feet diameter, is reminiscent of those found at popular resorts or beach houses. In other words, this is one nice umbrella. It's protected by Scotchgard, which means rain, snow, and sleet bead up and roll off, spills can be wiped away easily, and the thick fabric remains soft and breathable. The 8-foot pole, made of dense, heavy Shorea wood, comes in two pieces. Simply lie the umbrella down, screw one part into the other, then stand it up. The eight-point frame inside the umbrella, also made of Shorea wood, comes securely attached to the umbrella. To remove the cover, pull it over the ends of the frame. A white rope pulley inside the umbrella raises and lowers it. Insert a metal stick at the end of the rope into one of four holes in the pole, depending on whether you want the umbrella narrow (partly open) or wide (fully open). Excess rope can be tied up or even cut off, and brass fittings throughout give this umbrella a finished look. A decorative wooden knob, matching the pole, comes with the package and can be screwed on top of the umbrella. The umbrella and pole together weigh 20 pounds. You will need to buy a stand for this market umbrella, but assembly takes only two minutes. It comes with a one-year warranty against structural failure or defects. --Rhonda Langdon

The Oxford Garden 9' market umbrella outshades all others. The attention to detail is incredible. All materials...the poly-canvas, the shorea wood, and the real brass fittings are top quality. The umbrella is designed with 8 ribs which provides more strength. You won't have to worry about it breaking on a windy day. The use of a two pulley system makes it so easy to raise and lower the umbrella. I poured over similar umbrellas on auctions sites that were a third of the price, but kept

coming back to the Oxford Garden. I even contacted the manufacturer before my purchase. They were right on target with the description of the quality of their product. I live in a resort area. As a final test before my purchase, I visited a local resort. They had two similar market umbrellas around the pool which were purchased at a local discount retailer for a third of the price. After only one season, both had broken ribs that were rigged with aluminum tubing. The wood was cracking and the finish was all but gone. The sectioned pole was loose and wobbly. I could not be happier with my purchase.

I purchased this umbrella for my deck in the Northeast, as a replacement for a much more expensive one that had lasted 5 or 6 years but had developed a few holes and wear.

I've had this one for a year, and it's now heading for the trash.

As described, it arrived in two pieces and was never straight. (The same problem others have described.) It simply never looked like it was sturdy, and within a couple of months one of the umbrella ribs was broken.

Now, in a mild wind, the umbrella snapped into two pieces right around the area where they were screwed together.

I expect items, even ones that are reasonably cheap like this umbrella, to go together well and be reasonably sturdy. I made a mistake with this product.

I would definitely advise against buying this unless you need a cheap umbrella that will last one season, and you don't mind something that looks pretty cheap.

I have used this umbrella for almost one year in tropical Florida. As advertised, the umbrella comes in two pieces which must screwed together. The top piece is really too heavy for the supporting bottom piece. The fittings are solid-looking brass, but appearances can be deceiving. When the two pieces are screwed together, the umbrella is not straight because of the weight of the top. I am using the umbrella with the companion Oxford umbrella base and a glass/aluminum table. It was very difficult for two people to set up the umbrella because of its large size and weight. It has proved impossible to align the umbrella so that it stands straight. The bottom shaft is straight, but the weight of the top causes it to lean no matter how it is positioned. The polyester fabric has held up well under the Florida sun, but I cannot recommend this product because it is inherently unstable and may tip over. It could and probably would do considerable damage to anything in its path.
