Excellent German Dictionary.,

This is an excellent, larger-sized German Dictionary, I have the smaller version, as well. This has many, many word definitions and a very helpful selection of various German grammar rules, especially useful for written German. This does have the "new" spellings and many "new" words. I recommend this as a good, standard reference Dictionary to keep at home. If you wish to have a good Dictionary to carry around with you, try the smaller version of the Oxford German Dictionary. There are fewer words, but more than enough for what you might need in a classroom situation. The large dictionary might be a bit intense for beginners, but sooner or later, every German student will wish to own this. Recommended.

I'm a graduate student studying comparative religion. A large chunk of the articles I need to deal with are in German and for that purpose, as well as for the advanced German class I'm taking for my degree, I decided to purchase this dictionary to replace my previous "Pocket" revised edition Oxford German dictionary. After I got this, however, I realised that quite a few of the helpful grammar sections that were in my older dictionary weren't in this edition. Most importantly, the rather helpful list of cases which appear after specific prepositions. When one buys a bigger version of a dictionary one already owns, it's normal to expect that one will be getting MORE stuff, rather than less. I have to say I'm more than a little disappointed at the product I received.

This is the ultimate version of German dictionary. The texts are clear and well-printed. Many examples are given, and is easy to read. It provides a lot of useful information and tips. With cheap price and very satisfying condition and contents, this dictionary deserves even more than five stars.

Good book, and even better bonus CD - but Amazon app buyers beware!,

... this is a bilingual dictionary - not German only.Details on the caveat: I made the mistake of ordering this from the Amazon app on my new Droid2 cell phone, instead of going directly to Amazon.de to research and order a German language dictionary. The Amazon app provides NOTHING by way of Product Description, but since the picture of the cover prominently displays "German dictionary" on the cover, I took that to mean this is the type of dictionary a German native might use to look up German language definitions for German words. The tip off should have been that the title wasn't Deutsches Wörterbuch. Duh... If you're reading these reviews at the Amazon website, you can clearly see by the Product Description that this book "provides authoritative coverage of German and English", but again, the app provides no such clue. Having said that: I am keeping this dictionary anyway. As a student of the German language, I need all the resources I can lay my hands on and, while this volume isn't quite as thorough as my Langenscheidt's Condensed Muret~Sanders German/English and English/German set - providing fewer entries (270,000 vs 320,000), it does so in one volume vs Langenscheidt's two. Also, the accompanying Speak German CD will come in quite handy for my wife who is beginning her German studies and whose ear needs to hear correct pronunciation of German words. Even better, when the Speak German application is running on your PC, it also provides a tool for German->English or English->German (depending on program setting) translations via cursor flyover. I find this actually a more useful tool than the dictionary itself. Conclusion: So, while there are better bilingual dictionaries out there, this one's not bad for a one volume resource, and the bonus CD provides a lot of extra bang for your buck! FYI I'm just ordered the Wahrig Deutsches Wörterbuch to from Amazon.de. That's what I was looking for in the first place. Mach's gut.

Best dictionary for English speakers taking up a serious study of German,

This dictionary is an excellent reference for use by students who are planning to read literature and write papers in German or who are studying the language in depth. It offers a large vocabulary and, most importantly, extensive examples of usage--indispensable for someone trying to express him/herself correctly in German. It also offers notes on culture. For instance, there are explanations of the term "Blauer Engel" and of "Oktoberfest", among many others. The dictionary comes with a CD ROM that can be used in a laptop to make the reference material portable. However, this is basically a large desktop volume, not a quick reference for travelers. If you are looking for a reasonably-priced, extensive reference for studying German, then this is the one for you.

I am in the beginning stages of learning the beautiful language. My niece gave me a paperback German-English/English-German Dictionary; it served me well until the pages started to become loose. Thus, I decided to buy a hardcover dictionary, and I am not disappointed with my choice. The Oxford German Dictionary is very thorough: it not only gives all of the meanings of a word, but also illustrates the usage of the word in sereral sentences. Even in the beginning stages of German - my working vocabulary has yet to reach 1000 words - I can understand the German in many of the example sentences. This dictionary, along with Larry Wells "Handbuch Zur Deutschen Grammatik" - an excellent text for German Grammar - and Henry Strutz "501 German Verbs" makes it fun to learn German. For anybody who wants a thorough German Dictionary, the Oxford German Dictionary is an excellent choice.

When ordering this item, I believed it was a German dictionary (like a "Duden ") not an" English-German" one. The description was deceiving! For what it is, a good edition.
