This is a book of FIRST RESORT. The handbook will help a practitioner scope a public health issue more quickly, more thoroughly, and more systematically. It introduces learning practitioners to the early phases of approaching a public health issue. They can then develop their own more systematci framework of addressing public health problems and solutions more quickly and effectively. Each chapter clearly lays out how to subdivide the approach to a public health concept, method, or issue into specific areas or tasks. The handbook outlines the esential stepst to help the reader achieve the following: understand the population approaches to population health problems; deconstruct a public health problem into a number of tasks and know what competencies are needed to achieve these tasks; improve the reader's ability to helap and/or teach others to be able to understand the fundamental issues clearly; to be able to tell their employer more clearly what needs to be done about a particular issue; and to feel more confident and competent about what they do know and what they don't know when addressing public health issues.

Review

Oxford - with Muir Gray as its guiding light, is once again a metaphorical meeting place for ideas, inspiration and great teaching. Just as Laurent Blanc kissed the bald pate of Fabien Barthez before each game in France's glorious World Cup winning run, kiss the cover of the Oxford Handbook of Public Health Practice before you open it. You will have found a true soul mate. From the foreword by Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer The editors of the Oxford Handbook of Public Health Practice have achieved their aim. It is excellent value for money and is essential reading for new trainees and experienced practitioners of Public Health Medicine alike. Public Health This pocket-sized book is packed full of practical information about how to make things happen in public health. In 66 admirably concise chapters it covers a vast amount of territory from appraising research evidence to improving personal effectiveness. Laurence Gruer, Director for Postgraduate and Continuing Education in Public Health Medicine, Public Health Institute of Scotland The 'must have' public health book of the year, if not the decade... a superb book. Public Health The book is so well compiled and edited, it is of immense value and help to anyone involved in public health... training schemes should provide a personal copy to all trainees all over the country... certainly a worthwhile investment. Dr P Badrinath, St Clements Hospital, Ipswich One of the most helpful books I have found within this field... a fantastic study aid for exams. Reviewer on Amazon.co.uk

5.0 out of 5 stars Old but still a key reference, July 12, 2010
I bought this during my MPH a few years ago - I was too cheap to get the most up to date version. And frankly, other than my econs and stats textbooks, this is the only reference text I have AND use. Definitely a must for any public health specialist and serves as my lexikon for when I am in need of a quick definition and/or things past studied and in need of some refreshing.
