This amazing idea has been torpedoed inexplicably by the failure to include the gender of the nouns.
Is it masculine? Is it feminine? You'll have to look up each and every word in a REAL dictionary.
How this omission was chosen is beyond imagination. Bizarre.
Do not buy.

The BEST feature of the New Oxford Picture Dictionary is that the workbook and textbook pages are correlated. It is SO much easier to teach a class of non-English speaking clients and SO much easier for them to experience success. They LOVE the format and the information is pertinent, with necessary language skills taught first. The pictures are EXCELLENT, and the content superb. Because I teach for 8 hours a day before teaching an English as Second Lang. class, I have little time to prepare. This series offers a simple, direct approach that is easy to reference, and easy to work with independently for the novice English speaker. BEST picture dictionary/workbook on the market. Please publish one in Norwegian! I will buy it!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Must" For ESL Classes, June 5, 2004
By
A J Risser (Watertown, Wisconsin USA) - See all my reviews
I'm relatively new at teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to Spanish speaking adults. Over the past year I've learned that this book is the first one I reach for when having trouble communicating with my students. Better yet, it is the first book the students reach for when trying to understand or with communicate with me.

This book addresses conversational English giving the student a way to communicate in an English speaking country. The words and pictures are pertinent to everyday living and very descriptive.

I have researched other books, but have not found anything which comes close -- at any price! -- to this picture dictionary.

If you only purchase one book of this type, this is the one to buy. If you are going to buy mulitple books on this subject, this should be the first one!

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English/Spanish, December 21, 2000
By A Customer
It's impossible to overstate how useful this book is to students struggling to learn English. Although many entry-level learners have no patience with using a standard bilingual dictionary, they are reluctant to put this book down.

The scenes from daily life (with the possible exception of outer space) are extremely helpful, particularly those dealing with work situations and vehicles.

I have only two criticisms of this book: 1) Adding relevant verbs to the actions in each scene would be very useful (granted, this is asking a lot from a dictionary); 2) Phonetic transcriptions, particularly of the English words, would help enormously in pronunciation.

For someone able to buy only one self-study book, I would say, "This is the one!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book, April 27, 2004
By A Customer
If, like me, you came here looking for a child's spanish word book then look no further.

This book is fantastic for adults as it has a lot more detail than other spanish word books.I have a couple of similar books but this one is definitely the best. Each item is clearly numbered and includes both the Spanish/English translation. Great pictures too !

mejor comprar para tu !!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A great source for language study, August 17, 2005
This is one of the best English-Spanish Picture Book Dictionaries I've used; it is a great source for studying both languages. I am a linguistic professor and go over numerous publications all the time. Simple conversational language pertinent to everyday activities and supporting illustrations offered in The New Oxford Picture Book Dictionary (English/Spanish) by E.C. Parnwell really make the study effective and entertaining for youth and adult category. For younger learners of both English and Spanish languages pick the English Spanish Picture Book Dictionary by Valerie Laud with simple key phrases for children's basic conversations and marvelous illustrations.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for ESL or for teens and up learning Spanish, January 2, 2006
By
I used this for several years in my Adult ESL classes - the words, and matching up the numbers are a little cumbersome for any age younger than junior high, I think. The only drawback is the lack of phonetic spelling - I think we expect it from a dictionary, but most picture dictionaries leave that part out for some reason.

This is not a good book for young children - too many things to look at on one page...EXCELLENT resource for adults and teens, though, who are eager to increase vocabulary and are confident with pronunciation. I use it a lot in my Spanish classes, and even as a reference, when wanting to boost the vocabulary list for the week.

For the younger child, try Flip Flop Spanish, which comes with a CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource, March 21, 2006
As a teacher for community Adult ESL classes with 100% Spanish speaking students I can say that my classes are THRILLED with this bi-lingual, pictoral resource. I know some schools of thought resist the use of native language but my students find comfort and help with the bi-lingual translations (as do I as a Spanish Language learner). This book gives you lots of bang for your buck and the teacher resource materials are very useful, too!!!

What is there to say about the book. It's got tons of pictures and with a number next to all the pictures, it tells you at the bottom how to say that object in english and in spanish. Very helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars SUPERB PROGRAM IDEAL FOR ANYONE LEARNING ENGLISH OR SPANISH!!!!, October 15, 2009

This review is from: The New Oxford Picture Dictionary CD-ROM: Bilingual English-Spanish Edition (single user licence): Bilingual English/Spanish (Windows/Macintosh) (New Oxford Picture Dictionary (1988 Ed.)) (CD-ROM)
The New Oxford Picture Dictionary CD-ROM is a perfect addition for anyone serious about learning a ton of vocabulary in either English or Spanish. This edition of the Oxford Picture Dictionary contains many words used throughout Latin America and the Caribbean. For instance, you will learn autobús and guagua for bus. Also, basurero and zafacón for trashcan. So, for those who are interested in learning the variations within the Spanish speaking world for a number of common words, this is a great starting place. I found that the 2009 edition does not distinguish between the dialectal differences throughout Latin America and the Caribbean, however use words that may be more common or considered more "standard" within the Spanish language.

Regarding the CD-ROM, each section is divided similar to the paperback 1998 edition. The words are spoken in native English and Spanish respectively. It's easy to use and because the entire book is on the CD-ROM, you do not necessarily need the paperback version. You simply click on a word to hear how it is said. You have an option to hear and read all vocabulary in either English/Spanish, Spanish only or English only. Which makes it more unique and for the price the most affordable way to learn thousands of words effortlessly. Seeing a picture, hearing the word spoken and using a visual approach to learning, makes the process easy and the vocabulary more memorable.

That said, all of CD activities and tests are in English as the Oxford Picture Dictionaries are created for those who wish to learn English, not a foreign language. Likewise, this program is their older version and works only on XP or older for Windows. I'm not certain how it will function on newer Macs. The newer CD-ROM offered by Oxford does not have a bilingual version. So, if you are like me...using their bilingual Spanish/English CD-ROM and texts, the newest CD-ROM will not benefit.

I find the Oxford bilingual series to be the best on the market and the least expensive. They are easy to use and contain some of the most essential vocabulary words one would need to know no matter what language they are learning. I highly recommend the CD-ROM as it is a great resource for any serious student or language-learning enthusiast such as myself.

Thank you!
