I purchased this book since I have a fairly decent comprehension of basic Japanese but needed to expand my vocabulary.

If you are learning Japanese you need to know that the book is designed for English learners. This means that the Japanese word is given in Kanji without the furigana readings. Basically, you are expected to be able to read Japanese.

This book is, however, a great learning tool, in spite of this. The pictures are clear, and the phrases/words are very relevant and split up into sections. For example:

Under "job safety" there are things like ear muffs, hard hats, etc.

Under "plants" there are things like magnolia, birchwood, etc.

overall, this book is great for the learner of Japanese so long as you have a kanji dictionary handy and have a decent grasp of basic written Japanese.

This book has over 800 pages full of of pictures. Some of the words in here I don't even know in English. But if you want to know the Japanese words for the human anatomy, electrician's tools, musical instruments, etc., it's in this book. The book conveniently groups words together into sensible categories like plants, mammals, supermarkets, and airports. It has an index in the back in both English and Japanese for quick reference. The only drawback to this dictionary is that it doesn't Romanize the pronounciation of Japanese words, so for a Westerner unfamiliar with the Japanese alphabet, reading these words is very difficult, if not impossible. However, I highly recommend this book to anyone who comes to visit Japan. This is the easiest, most comprehensive dictionary I've seen to date.

I bought this book thinking it would b user friendly for English speakers learning Japanese, but it looks to be intended for Japanese learning English. Unless you have a good working knowledge of written Japanese, especially kanji, this may not be the book for you. I rated it at 4 stars because it is a very good book for it's intended auience.

This is an excellent picture dictionary with hundreds (maybe thousands) of gorgeous pictures, and is separated into 13 major categories (Food, Clothing, Transporation, etc). The pictures are detailed, the fonts are very clear to read, and it covers many vocabulary words you may not have learned in Japanese Class such as current electronics, types of tv programs (soap opera, news, and animal programs are included), or different kinds of natural disasters.

However, the reviewer giving this book a 1 star does have a point: many of the images have names containing kanji, and there is no furigana to help you pronounce the kanji. This book is useless if you cannot read hiragana and katakana. However, if you are an intermediate Japanese learner, and have a kanji dictionary, this book is immensely useful.

I disagree with anyone stating this dictionary is for English speakers, because I believe this book is actually meant for Japanese speakers learning English. Why? Because the Kanji has no furgana and is complex. Because the English section of the index has a pronunciation for each word. Because there is a table of English Irregular Verbs. Because the questions at the bottom of each page emphasize English grammatical structures. And because the vocabulary clearly focuses on the American way of life (including key vocabulary for discussing the Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches).

Again, I think this is an excellent resource for intermediate Japanese language students who have a grasp on Japanese grammar, and have the ability to look up kanji.

And one last note, I think another reviewer made a typo in stating that this book has 800 pages. My 2008 version has only 300 pages.

This book has great illustrations for everyday English topics related to school, food, shopping, etc. I wish they had one specifically for the manufacturing industry.

The Japanese student and their English speaking family members were delighted with the dictionary. It opened up lines of communication and stimulated smiles rather than frustrated frowns. It was more helpful than an electronic handheld translator due to the pictures and colors. Thank you!

I really like this book. It may not be 100% accurate, but it allows for very efficient ESL vocabulary building. Of course it's important to try to use the all English version, but I have a student who came all the way to the US from Tokyo for just 25 days. He is doing over 60 hours of ESL in that time and needs to maximize results, so this OPD version is great! I do, however, think this needs some updating on the tech side, i.e. smartphones, iTunes, WiFi and other IT. I hope Oxford is going to come out with a new version: [...]
